We went very recently and the most memorable thing about this tasting was all of the fruit flies. They were all over us, the wine, the room...hmm.

I like just about all the wine they have. It is not often that this happens. The staff is very nice and it is a great place to bring a picnic basket and just relax with a bottle of wine. Well worth the visit.

We live only a few minutes from this vineyard, but have always driven hours to many other areas of VA to visit wineries. Today we wanted to try something close, so we decided to give Hartwood a try. We looked at their site ahead of time and picked a few wines that seemed like we might like to try and when we went in, the gracious staff allowed us to do a very abbreviated tasting and only taste these and they didn't charge. Their tasting fee is very affordable at only $7, should you choose to try them all. They offer a nice selection of wines, of which their chardonnay is great! It's oaky, but not too buttery. Their Hartwood Station White is also very nice! If you enjoy the subtle notes of cherry, their rose is quite delicious!Their tasting room is quaint, but ample. The location is not along the route of many other vineyards, but it's worth driving a little out of the way to give them a try.

Pros: Friendly, Relaxing Scenery, Family owned and operated, EventsCons: Small, Average WinesThis will be one of my shorter reviews for a Virginia winery. I arrived to Hartwood Winery a little later in the day as they were starting to shut down. I was sad because Unicorn Winery had a table set up there as well and I enjoyed Unicorn winery previously.Hartwood Winery is located just a small track off of Route 17, just west of Stafford and North of Fredricksburg. The area is pretty although not as scenic as many western or northern wineries. There is a slight country feel. The vineyard and winery is somewhat small but it still gives you the comfort of knowing you're at a vineyard and winery with the view and surrounding area of the tasting room.I arrived to Hartwood winery and was met by a gentlemen and he set up the tasting. I was then turned to Bev (Beverly) who continued to serve me. She was friendly and very informative of all of the wines. It wasn't until later that I found out and realized that she was the owners wife and one of the high points of actually tasting with one of the owners. The wines were average to my taste although I enjoyed the variety. I expected a bit more from an older vineyard and winery. Some seem to favor the wines and as always it's personal preference on what wines people enjoy.Overall, I would like to give this winery another chance before I full decide whether to recommend it or not. I think if you're in the area, why not give it a try, but I believe due to it's size and somewhat average wines, it will be overlooked by some of the wineries in the area. I wouldn't recommend this winery to a larger group due to the smaller size, but if you're looking for a winery with some nice deck scenery and just enjoying a glass of Virginia wine, this would be a good place. I would say that it may be good to visit if you're checking on events as they seem to have a few happening throughout the months.

We were impressed as soon as we walked in & one of the staff greeted us warmly. As the bar was full, she asked if would mind a seated tasting. Nope, not all. Our tasting felt more personal (like we had our own personal server) & as another server walked by to another table, she would drop by us offering us a tasting. We felt like everyone wanted us to drink! Their wines are tasty & their tasting room very comfy. Enjoyed our visit & plan to buy more in the future.

We have just began exploring Virginia wineries and decided to stop at this one on the way down to Williamsburg. Located on a small farm, it isn't what your used to seeing when you drive up to the ritzier, larger wineries but that does not mean it didn't have beauty and charm. The owners were here from the beginning, when they opened this winery they were told that growing grapes and making wine in Virginia would never work and they were only allowed to open the business if it was situated on a farm within the community. The owner led the tasting and the wine was great. We believe that to be true wine lovers you want to introduce your visitors to other wineries and their wines since, especially in Virginia, they can all be very unique. She informed us of a tasting deal that was going on for the month of October, it saved us money on four tastings at four separate wineries. One of these wineries we had not planned on visiting but we did and met the greatest people. This is a winery to visit, they have a lot of festivals and events during the year on the property, and these events are very kid friendly.

Visited for a tour and wine tasting. Beverly, one of the owners really told us all about the winery and the wines during the tasting. The winery is a family run business and the passion they have for Virginia and the success of the state's wineries is contagious. Perfect afternoon.

If you're going here, just go for the wine. This is not really a place to hang out, as it's basically a house with a deck on the back. That being said, we really did like the wines. The owners were very helpful and friendly.

What a great place to spend a wonderful afternoon on Saturday or Sunday. We love their Hartwood Red and their Reserve reds are also very good. A simple, non-pretentious atmosphere.
