old davie school historical museum

This is the site of one of the very first area schools constructed specifically for African Americans. Initially limited to only 6th grade education, this center depicts the journey of education in the county from 6th grade and 7 months term, to full high school similar to white students. The curator is engaging, exciting and knowledgeable. This is off the beaten path but worth the trip.

Smithsonian had a free museum/zoo day so took advantage it. Have passed the school for years but never stopped. Free made me stop! This is an old school 1917 and I'm not that old sure brought back some cool memories. The desk, black board, a b c above them. Its a small museum with the school room and 2 additional museums for the Davie and one for the rodeo that is held monthly. There are also 3 houses on the property with a garden & stalls for animals. What hit me was the desk, coat hook and the floor..so old and still in great condition. Love the kitchen in the houses old frig, porcelain sink. I say it would be a bit over a hour but you can spend more time just remembering you old school days.
