We bought a boat in 2013 and decided to follow the previous owner's advice at dock it at Rough River. We have been very happy with this decision. We live in Floyd County, Indiana just NW of Louisville. For us, Rough River is a 90 minute drive. Patoka is a bit closer, but we don’t like it as well as Rough River. Rough River has a lot more open space and deep areas. When we took the kids to Patoka, the water was too shallow to tube in, and there were a lot of trees growing in the water. The speed limit was reduced (justifiably) in most areas. At Rough River, there are houses on the water. This does make it more desirable for those looking to purchase a lake house. At Patoka, the land on the water is all state owned and not developed. We tent camp at the state owned camp ground. Other than the washers and dryers being in and out of service we have no complaints. We just don’t count on doing laundry during our visits.

This is a very rural area of Kentucky. Finding lodging and good meals was a challenge, until I found RR State Park. Friendly, courteous, and helpful staff who appreciate your business. Absolutely the best fried catfish I've every tasted. Although, dated the rooms are clean, well appointed with good WiFi and reasonably priced. Did I say the view is great from your private balcony? Very relaxing after a hard day.
