I grew up in Winchester and watched Hammer's expand through the years. I've since moved away and return a couple of times a year. I was shocked and disappointed by the move to the new location. The atmosphere of the location on the square was the appeal. Now Hammer's doesn't have that anymore. The employees are not very helpful or friendly (at either location). The prices are good on some items but not on others. The quality of clothing has to be checked carefully for flaws. Hammer's gets some good name merchandise at a discount because it didn't pass factory inspection. I wouldn't suggest shopping there now that they don't have the appeal of the old location.I hated to see Hammer's move from the square and I think it will be the death of the store.There is a Hammer's in South Pittsburg that has more atmosphere and he employees are generally a little more friendly.I won't shop at the Hammer's in Winchester at the new location again.

Not friendly. Had to go looking for a clerk. Dirty store won't go back.shelves were a mess not friendly at all

We found several great bargains at Hammers. But not everything is a bargain. We especially liked the selection of Men's jeans and work clothes. Definitely not a classy joint.

I love the new Hammers! I know ppl have a hard time with change like the comments below. My problem with what they said is none of it is true! First I would like to say Hammers did what was best for there business, and there employees. Plain, and simple. The Hammers on the square was dead! If they would have stayed they would have went out of business, and all there employees would have lost there jobs. Try thinking out it that way! They did not do it to be mean everyone loves the old building. Now on to the comments about the ppl that work there. I've been shopping there for 30 years and never had one employee be rude to me. So maybe it's y'all that have the problem. Now to the part about the fabric, and the toys here's and new Flash everything that is the new hammers came from the old Hammers! So you obviously you never came to the old one you just want something to complain about! Now about the toys shop any where but Walmart and you will see the toys are priced lower then anywhere else! Get a life ppl! I love Hammers , and support the new store and love it!

Although the building on the square could certainly use some updating, it did have a very homey ambiance. The new building is just not the same; so sterile! I've only gone in there a couple of times and just don't get that "happy" feeling. Also, I think the quality of fabric is far inferior than previously. Although I have been going there for many years, I probably won't frequent the new location much.

I have been going to Hammer's in Winchester for over 30 years. I loved when they were on the square where you could meander through the store at your own pace. They have some great buys and not so great buys but the atmosphere was part of the experience. Recently they moved to Dinah Shore Blvd into an old WalMart building. So after months of waiting to see the new store, I finally drove up there to see it. The employees had assured me how great it would be, no more smelly basement, mold or old fixtures. (In her words) So me and my friends go in the store and it is wide open, like Wal Mart, with a handful of employees. There is no ambience. The clerks are as unfriendly as always. It's not merchandised very well. Their toy prices are higher than Amazon and about the same as Toysrus. Especially the Melissa and Doug items. The fabric department is in the back corner, with the same grumpy old woman who never EVER speaks to you. The women's department is between the shoes and toy aisle. They did have a $5 rack and it looked a little overpriced for the cheap merchandise. It is very much like a bad TJ Maxx minus the good prices. I was hoping for so much more. I just can't imagine this store here for long. Other than the easy parking, it has nothing going for it. It all goes back to "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality. It just doesn't have enough to compete with other local stores. At least the rest of the town is super friendly.

Please ignore the comment below! Hammers is wonderful the ladies that work their are very helpful when asked. My family, and I always have a great time and find awesome deals. I mean really ppl do you go to walmart. And just expept the employees to ask you if you need help. We love Hammers it is a great place to shop and find deals! Please continue to be an awesome down home store in your new building!

Went into store just to browse. was in store for twenty minutes, noone offered to help me find what i needed. very poor customer service. but had large selection, but won't shop there because of lack of customer service.

We were in the area for just a short time and decided to stop. I liked the old-time feel of a general store. Very good selection of kids toys that you can't find just anywhere.

You need to stop in Hammer's, simply because it's the kind of place that doesn't exist anymore. In a world of Target and Wal-Mart, Hammer's is a lost gem. You almost expect to see Andy Griffith (if he were still alive, God bless him) shopping there in his sheriff's outfit. Old-fashioned service, low low prices, and a blast from the past!

I have grown up visiting a town not far from Winchester, and it's ALWAYS on the list of things to do while we're there. The town is reminiscent of Mayberry, in that it's an old town square with the court house in the center of it all. Just driving into town sets you back about 50 years or more. Then you go into the building and it's demeanor and attitude is laid back and comforting. If you're there in a rush shopping, it might not be your cup of tea. But if you're just enjoying the town, and the surrounding area, it's a must. Great prices, good quality merchandise if you know what you're looking for, and a great toy store upstairs. As mentioned before, I've gone in there and come out with tons of things, and also gone in there and found nothing at all. This is equivalent to going to a $1 movie theater, you're not going for the service, you're going for the deals. So, ignore those that complain about the service. It's not like they're selling $3,000 suits...

As long as i can remember when my family came by Winchester we'd always stop by the hammers and get what we need. One of my fondest memories growing up is looking around the upstairs toy store with my granddad. It has every thing you could need if your in the area.

I make an annual trip to Hammers when I go down to Winchester to get my auto tag, and I enjoy every minute of it. Hammers is a hit-or-miss experience -- sometimes I come out with a carload of stuff, sometimes empty-handed. It just all depends on what strikes my fancy and what they've got in. A lot of the stock is "firsts", some "seconds", and some I would rank as "eighths", but even those have value. They had some reject children's books that were missing pages, but they made great cut-outs for crafts. You just have to pay attention to what you are buying. Some of the items are purchased from stores that are closing, but that's when I found vacuum cleaner bags for an odd-sized vacuum and a large selection of Madame Alexander dolls in the original boxes. One of their popular areas is the rolls of fabric and headliner material from automotive suppliers. I've bought $2 reading glasses, $20/yard fabric, 4-inch-thick mattress foam, jam, books, Christmas decorations, and the best-looking preserved eucalyptus that I have seen in any store at any price. The staff is friendly but not "in your face" -- if you want help, ask for it and they go to the ends of the earth to assist. Be sure to allow at least an hour just to hit the high points -- if you look at clothes, add at least another hour. It is a true experience.

My family and I have made the trip out to Hammer's twice now, and both times we have enjoyed our experience. The setting is idyllic; Hammer's occupies an entire block on the city square. There are mulitple stories of everything imaginable. Rugs, sporting equipment, craft supplies, fabrics, clothing, toys, streching endlessly. The nooks and crannies have nooks and crannies.Regarding prices, some items are cheap, some are fairly priced, and some are expensive. For instance, I bought a snuggly warm tobagan there for a dollar, I bought a pair of Isotoner leather gloves for around fourteen dollars, and some fabric for around eight dollars a yard. The tobogan was a deal, the gloves were fairly priced, and I only paid the exorbanant price on the sushi-patterned fabric because I knew I couldn't get it anywhere else. Other deals include a huge insulated army jacket for my husband for under $30.For me, the real attraction is the toy department upstairs. You will not find Brats dolls here. What you will find is a couple of walls full of Breyer horses, model cars, puzzles, and old-fashioned or educational toys. I picked up a couple of boxes of Lincoln Logs for my mom (she's a teacher) because she hadn't been able to find any in traditional toy stores.Regarding the service, my only complaint is that the lines were a bit slow. I found the service friendly, and though I am a Tennessean, I would not call myself a local. Both times I visited the store, the clerks chatted with me. I am also grateful for the soda machine in the store, which sells RC for less than 50 cents a can.

Hammers is a delightful shopping center located in the center of the town of Winchester. It is surely reminiscent of old when, to paraphrase Jimmy Carter in his book "An Hour Before Daylight" , "The bustling town square was wall to wall people,...resembling a state fair". It resides in an entire block of buildings, utilizing both floors and a partial basement. It is required first stop shopping for any visiting Yankee wishing a degree of anonymity as it offers not only a variety of requisite camouflage head to toe clothing from East Germany to Carhartt, but Tennessee and Alabama College apparel as well at about a third to a half of what one would expect to pay. One can't help but fit in after a shopping spree there. There is also much in the way of other styles of dress, home furnishings like John Deere dining ware, and even books. It is a great place to purchase hot weather golf clothing.Hammers is staffed by a fast moving gentleman (the owner) and a number of gentile, soft-spoken, experienced southern belles. Shoppers will find Hammers and its environs most interesting and far more than adequate.
