We hopped off the interstate one day and drove into this little town. There is parking on the street around the drug store. This is still an operating drug store and still has its ‘soda fountain’ bar like they all did a lot of years ago. There are a few booths in the middle of the room and the ice cream and shakes we got were very good. The working pharmacy counter is in the back and there are odd things to look at on the walls. I liked the pictures of the interior of the drug store that showed its different looks over the years. It’s a nice respite for the family to take a break from the interstate.

Cross Plains is off the beaten path but well worth a visit. Park and wander around all the streets looking at the historic houses. You must visit the historic Thomas Drugs Store which is like walking back in time to 1915. Great atmosphere, very friendly staff with great milkshakes! We tried the peach, cherry and pecan milkshakes and they were like a milkshake should be. We were visiting from the UK and it was nice to find a pleasant place to stop and explore.
