This is so worth the 4 miles off the interstate! The staff is so friendly and helpful! The ice cream is the best! I had a shamrock shake- nothing like McDonalds! It was outstanding! You can tour the farm but there is a small admission fee. I highly recommend the experience !

Very interesting and informative. Great way to entertain the kids on the third snow day in a row! If you are sensitive to odors the burned plastic smell of the bottles being made could upset sensitive stomaches. Because of the poor weather weather the tour of the facility stayed inside and there was quite a few stairs. If you are unsure on your feet you might choose somewhere else. There are lots of wet floors, they are constantly cleaning :-). The ice cream cone at the end is earned worth the walking. I envy the locals who can get a cone here everyday.

We took the tour of Mayfields & it was super cool! Very informative & you just might learn something too! A great activity for the whole family& it ends in the snack bar/ice cream shop!!

A great pit stop on the family trip. The tour isn't too long, but long enough to see and learn some interesting facts and history. You only physically see the packaging process. No real cows at this facility. Afterwards you get a super fresh scoop of ice cream that is very good. Eat lunch first though because no real food is served here.

On our way back from Pigeon Forge, we decided to detour a little to Athens TN and visit Mayfield Dairy Farm. Now, you won't see any REAL cows here, but you will get a nice little tour to see what it's like to package milk and ice cream in a factory. It was a great little field trip for my 10 year old granddaughter! It is $4.50 for adults and $3.50 for children. The tour begins every hour. You watch a short video and after that, you put on hair nets to abide by the health code. Then you begin on the walking tour throughout the factory. You go to the areas where the plastic cartons are produced, where the milk is packaged and then where the ice cream gets processed and packaged all while a tour guide is explaining everything. When you get finished, you are treated to a choice of an ice cream cone or cup in any of the flavors they have in their ice cream parlor. There are even a few flavors that you can't get in the store.This little adventure was well worth our time spent. There was even a nice little gift shop and the restrooms were very clean. If you love southern history and ice cream, this is the place to visit. We loved it! The only negative thing to say about this is that is not accessible for wheel chairs. You have to climb a few dififferent steps to get back and forth different areas.

We had a lot of fun on the tour. Very informative. Learned about ice cream and milk. Have to wear hair nets and turn off phones. No pictures allowed. Free scoop of ice cream at the end. Lots of fun!

Ice cream is fabulous plus they have flavors not available in stores. They have special milk shakes this summer and tried several of those and they were really good and different. Good atmosphere and service!

This tour starts off with a ten minute video and then your taken into the production plant where you see how they manufacture and produce their milk and ice cream. The tour guide provides detailed information of each process and if you have any questions they are very informative. I did notice they have limited access for anyone with a handicap as we have to go up and down several stairs. We had an older person who was not able to continue part of the tour due to this. They also give a ticket to claim a scoop of ice cream at the end of the tour. Overall not a bad tour.

Good place to take the kids. The tour us educational. And they have really good ice cream!! Everyone that comes to visit us, we take to Mayfield's for the tour.

After having said that, make sure you stop here. You can just come to eat ice cream and look at the gift shop, or you can take the 45 minute tour for a few dollars (it has steps and slippery areas so be aware). You get a free single scoop of ice cream with the tour, so we ate that first while waiting on the tour to start. Very good ice cream, love the moose tracks! The gift shop is small but has some interesting stuff. The tour starts with a video (brik a light jacket if you get cold easily) and you move on to see the jugs being made, and the milk being poured. It’s a neat tour, worth the money, you will have to wear hairnets. It’s a must see in Athens!

I was not sure what to expect when I went to tour this factory but it was interesting. I was able to see how the plastic milk jugs are made and filled and how ice cream is packaged. At the end of the tour, I was able to enjoy a scoop of ice cream before I headed back out on the road. This tour is for kids and adults as there is something interesting for both.

This was a very good tour lots of good information. Because I have been a city girl it was good to see how milk was bottled and ice cream packed. Sometime they do not do the ice cream part so you should call to see what they will do on day you go. At the end of tour you get a good ice cream cone. There are no cows here. You pay $4.50 for the tour.

I guess they are run by someone else and now you purchase ticket. Adult $4.50 which includes and ice cream. Like it better when more ice cream was produced at this plant. Still very interesting.

On an impulse, we visited the Mayfield Dairy, watched an introductory video and took a tour of the plant. What an interesting experience, from beginning to end. We got to watch their signature yellow milk bottles being made, filled, labeled and capped, as well as school lunch-size cartons (and chugs) being formed and filled. The history of the Mayfield family was most informative and the ice cream treat (either at the beginning or end) was delicious. My new favorite flavor? Birthday cake!

We were so excited to check out the Mayfield Dairy farm that we had heard so much about. After eating at Hunter's cafe in downtown Sweetwater, we drove down to Athens, about 10miles, for the simple satisfaction of some homemade ice-cream! Upon arrival, we learned that the plant is closed to tours on Wednesdays during season for maintenance and upkeep. We were heartbroken but we still got to indulge in the ice-cream parlor. The staff were extremely friendly and down-to-earth gals and answered any questions we had. There was a great gift shop/boutique area that offered a lot of various retail and nostalgia, and it was all priced very well. There was also a ton of history on the walls to learn if that's your thing, and it is to us. We are history buffs. It was also very clean-inside and out. We definitely want to revisit in the future.
