Stopped by this tree while geocaching. I wonder what the people living near by think of all of the people who come to visit this tree. :) Very interesting little stop.

Didn't even get out of the car but we did drive by. Glad it was close to downtown. If we would have had to drive much further we would not have gone.

This tree is really interesting! It's on a steep cobblestone back road. There is a little plaque at the bottom that explains the tree's story. What it doesn't say is that the tree is Jackson oak Jr. The original tree got knocked down but this one is over 70 years old. It's really fun to visit and come on; there aren't many trees that own themselves!

My girlfriend and I read about this online so we decided to stop by and it was pretty cool. We had a lot of trouble finding it and were just about to give up when we ran into it while driving down a random back road. It is just jutting out into the middle of the road and all cars are forced to drive around it. If you are here then stop by and take a couple of pictures!!

My cousin attends UGA and when I flew down to Georgia to visit he told me the story about the tree that owns itself. I found the story more interesting than the actual tree. Looking at the tree was cool because the placement of it was pretty awkward and you could tell that for some reason they weren't allowed to take the tree down. However, you really don't need more than two minutes to spend at the tree. My family did a quick drive by simply because it was neat to see.

I live in Athens and always take family and friends to see the Tree that Owns Itself when they come to visit. This is a 5-minute stop, and short walk from downtown. Please be respectful of the neighborhood, thanks!

There it was...the only tree I have ever seen (or heard of) that owns itself. A simple tree, fairly large & worth seeing.

So this person willed ownership of this bit of property and the oak on it to the tree. The tree died but someone planted an acorn from the tree and a fine oak grew from this acorn, It is on a little island of land a raised bed surrounded by a stone retaining wall and a strand of chain that sticks out into the road, Up a steep hill from broad street with the street paved with the original cobble stones. You have got to see it at least once if you are in Athens; but not worth a drive from out of town just to see it. Athens is a cool place to visit and this is just one of the nice sprinkles on top of the sundae.

Check the tree out. It is unique and nice to see a little bit of an oddity for our society. Plus, the one of the roads leading to the tree is still cobblestone.

This tree is a curiosity. Who would will a tree to itself? It is a good place to visit in passing just to say you have seen it.

I am a native of Athens, GA and The Tree That Owns Itself has been around for many years. The Tree That Owns Itself is a legacy of Athens, GA.

The drive up from Broad Street is a wonderful short stretch of cobblestone road -- the only one I know in Athens. The tree - actually some relative of the actual tree originally deeded the property - is a fairly unremarkable oak. Worth a drive by -- yes, but more for the cobblestone street!

When I'm in Athens, I always stop by to see The Tree. We talk. Well, I talk, The Tree listens. He is non-judgemental.The Tree That Owns Itself is off the beaten path, but only by a block. I like that, because you actually have to look for The Tree -- you're not likely to stumble upon him accidentally.

It has grown a lot since the first time I saw it. Still something impressive in this day and age that the man gave it freedom forever.

I mean... you cant really be disappointed by this. It is simply a tree that owns itself. It's an interesting subject to hear about and see for yourself. Good story.
