This museum was close to the Resort and easy to access. The Resort Shuttle was offered for transport, however, we chose to walk as it is in walking distance.

If you are interested in history or fishing this is a must. The people who were at the museum knew the locals who mad history in the area. They were full of stories and knowledge. So gled we went.

Housed in a red replica of a twin fish house in Bluefin Bay in Tofte, MN, the North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum tells the story of commercial fishing on Lake Superior through artifacts, old photos, actual equipment used, and oral accounts from fishermen.Three things I liked about the museum were (1)location is right on highway 61 and easy to find (2)you will learn about a subject that you won't find in other museums, and (3)it is small enough to easily be seen in a half hour yet if you want there are other interpretive sites in the Bluefin Bay area where you can get further information.Interactive exhibits such as letting you try turning a reel net used to dry the nets so they would not rot and first hand accounts in writing and a video were well done. Even if it is raining, the museum is indoors and is a good place to take a break. The museum is also a tourist center with lots of brochures and maps. Volunteers staff the museum and have lots of information on the museum but also on other attractions in the area.HOURS VARY depending on day of the week and time of year so check first. There is a nominal fee. Everything is on one floor, but there is one step into the museum which would be difficult for a wheelchair unless someone could hold the door.

If you are interested in the fishing families of the North Shore this is the place to go. The exhibits are good and videos very interesting. The Lake walk along the shore if Lake Superior has several interesting stops and exhibits.

The pictures, videos, and actual objects--fishing nets, sinkers, scales, fish boxes and a real boat gave us a picture of what life was like on Lake Superior. While small, the museum was attractive to both kids and adults.

Before you head off of Highway 61 to enjoy the scenery, be sure to stop here to get good maps and helpful information. The representative at the information desk was VERY HELPFUL! The museum also provides some rich history on the area.

Commercial fishing was such a major part of the North Shore in the past, it is great to see a museum to address the topic. I highly encourage the stop! You will learn a great deal about an industry that has faded away, but was very important in the past! Easy stop and not huge so it won't take up a great deal of time.

Youi never know what you might learn there! BFB guests get free admission, but you have to ask at the check-in office for passes. They don't seem to advertise it.
