This river is most associated with whitewater rafting, but if you camp on one of the remote sites on the northeastern shore of Lake Umbagog, you can paddle over and explore the first mile or two of serene and beautiful river before you start getting to the rapids, which are traveling against you. There are some camps and cabins in the area so there's a chance you'll see a few more people around here than you would at your average spot out on Umbagog. At some point I intend to kayak and photograph Pond in the River which is further up the river. Be aware of the weather at all times, the water in the river is very calm, but the wind had picked up that morning as I paddled out and I came back out into a very spirited Umbagog that I was glad to quickly get the kayak out of. Two or three of the remote Umbagog sites are a very easy paddle from the opening of the rapid river. One guy that morning was even snorkeling out in front of his cabin.

Great trip from pond in the river down to Lake Umbagog. For those whom seek interest of the area, while rafting just might get a glimpse of where the book " We took to the woods was written. My kind of vacation.
