This place has wonderful chiles, from red to green, from mild to atomic, from finely ground to rough for seasoning veggies, stews, eggs, whatever! They even have taco/salsa seasoning. They carry a wide array of religious artifacts, and reasonably priced jewelry to put a bit of sacred dirt into. They also have a small selection of local Native jewelry, as well as a larger selection of saint's medals, crosses, etc. The women are very friendly, and always willing to share a recipe. Be sure to pick up some roasted pine nuts as well!

What a great find. We bought so much chile to take home and they gave us recipes too. A real highlight of our visit.

El Potrero has a long history in the area, and carries a wide range of traditional folk art created by well-known Spanish Market artists of the area. Collectors come for the “retablos” (saints painted on wood), “bultos” (carved sculptures of saints), and “milagros” (“miracle” charms to wear, carry, or offer at the Santuario). Even if religious art isn’t your thing, El Portrero is located a short walk from the Santuario and is worth a trip inside to learn about these unique art forms that provide a glimpse into the culture of the area. On your way out, be sure to pick up a bag or two of the famous Chimayo Chile.
