The dozens of vultures seem to have taken over with very few other birds within. The ponds/marshes noted on the map have little to no water. One was a very smelly swamp. A large part of the trails are covered with vulture excrement - it stinks and can't be healthy to inhale. Save your money and go to Estero Llano, Santa Anna or the Valley Nature Center - all close by and all cheaper with birds. They either need to invest money and clean up the place and make it a real birding place or shut it down and stop taking money from unsuspecting visitors.

Top rarity hotspot. Amazing butterflies in Fall --crimson patch. Sit at feeders for chachalacas and many other birds.

This is a really cool place to visit. Trails are easy and filled with wonder at every corner. I promise. Make sure to swing by about 5:30pm from November to March for the roosting of the vultures, it's quite the show.

This is a small preserve in south Weslaco, TX that has had many interesting bird finds but over the past four or five years it has been overwhelmed during winter months by hundreds of Turkey Vultures. They are such beautiful gracefully fliers but they poop all over the place killing trees and keeping other species away!

Small and lush, this little sanctuary offers plenty of benches to sit and watch for the hummingbirds and warblers that like to frequent the area. The space is lovely for a picnic or casual relaxed birding, and is easy to find in Weslaco.

Very friendly staff that were willing to stay later so we could walk all the trails. It didn't take long, we saw many vultures, walked amongst their excrement, over grown, dry habitat. Needs some TLC and better signage. We had a beautiful day but was hard not to compare to Estero. The vultures must scare away the tweety birds. We bought a yearly pass to support the park.

We were disappointed with this site as it was run down and unkept. The trails were not marked and we found ourselves at a dead end trail that was underneath the turkey vultures roost. The smell was terrible and we were glad to get out of there. The songbirds weren't fed so we didn't see any. I bought a season pass for $25. as they need the support. We won't go back there again as there are too many better places to go.

A good birding spot. We saw green kingfisher, chachalacas and a couple of warblers. It is a nice wetland area and has feeders and butterflies at times. Bought a few postcards at gift shop.Like any birding area, sometimes you see more birds than others. I would visit here again.

Although the visiting Golden-crowned Warbler did not show for us, I got wonderful views and photos of many other birds... Chachalacas, White-tipped Doves, Olive Sparrows, several different warblers and Green Kingfisher to name a few. Definitely worth a visit for any birder and the grounds are well maintained and easy to navigate.

This 15 acre urban nature preserve has much to offer. Although right in Weslaco, it is surprisingly peaceful and restful. At your own pace you can visit a thorn forest (thicket), wetlands, butterfly garden, and visitor center/gift shop. I thought the gift shop had a great selection and purchased a book and two reasonably priced DVDs. They even provide sunscreen and bug spray if you need them. While I was there I did not see any extremely unusual butterflies or birds, but I enjoyed looking to see what was out on the delightful April morning I visited. The entrance fee was a little steep ($5.00) but I did not mind. Being from Minnesota this was all new scenery and wildlife to me. Trails were level and would provide no problem for a stroller or wheelchair. Because it is small, children would enjoy it. An experienced birder may want to spend their time at a larger site with greater variety of birds.

We enjoy birding but will never go here again. Cost is $5 a person and there are15 acres of thick forest to walk through. We went around 11 am on a most cloudy day and saw very few birds. Only one or two singing. This area is home to Turkey vultures roosting at night until migration in March. The leaves and paths are covered in bird feces and the smell is terrible. I can still feel it in my throat. Our shoes are filled in the grooves with crap. There were four other people at the park just prior to our arriving but no one else. Early in the morning or very late at night might be a better time. It was interesting to view the sabal palm thicket. In addition put on mosquito lotion before venturing in as there were many. There are better birding areas.
