The Llano area is usually the best place in Texas to see spectacular displays of bluebonnets. The best time to go is late March to early April. It's helpful to spend a night or 2 in the area, so you can see the fields in early morning or late evening light. And while you're there, sample the outstanding barbecue in LLano! Three years of drought seem to have taken their toll. We didn't see the vast fields of flowers that we were told about, though we did see some here and there, as well as the other common wildflowers of the area. We did find one large field of bluebonnets near Ennis, which ALSO has a bluebonnet festival and trail. Still, we had a nice trip and there are a few other things to see on that loop from Leander to Llano and back.

This is a great activity only when the flowers are in bloom and weather is perfect. That is unless you like uncomfortable weather and just a few flowers.

Best time for a nice Sunday drive is April and May. The bluebonnets will not disappoint you. Drive the golden triangle between Llano, Mason & Fredericksburg.
