This is a well known golf course that has held the LPGA Championships 2 or three times. There are 2 courses the River course and the Meadows course. This course is Public and is also linked to the AMERICAN CLUB in Kohler, Wisconsin.

Staff is extremely friendly! Food is very good plus they allow substitutions. Always accommodating. Has a great view of the golf course and a nice bar also. Have gone for special occasions also, and they make it special when they know.

Pretty and fair, you will like this a lot more than the Straits. Just make sure there is not a wedding party in front of you. The player assistants are actually pretty good about keeping play moving.

Blackwolf Run is the somewhat confusing name given to the two inland courses at The American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin. The two courses are actually the River Course and Meadow Valleys at Blackwolf Run. This is a review of the lesser of the two courses, Meadow Valleys although using the word lesser is somewhat pejorative, If this was a stand alone operation that didn't have to compete with the River course let alone the two courses at Whistling Straits I think most people would be raving about it.This is a Pete Dye course that has two very distinct 9's, thus Meadow Valleys. It shares a great log constructed clubhouse which has a deck from which you can watch groups finish on both the courses. Double greens used by two holes are uncommon enough, but have you ever seen one where the shared green was the finishing hole for two different golf courses? Pure Pete Dye genius.Although you can take a cart here I strongly recommend hiring a caddy to accompany each two some. You don't necessarily have to walk, but just having a caddy to help you position drives and read the putts makes for a much more enjoyable experience and besides these caddies all have great stories to share. The opening nine plays as expected in a meadow-like atmosphere that is a gentle introduction into what Pete has in store. All of the courses at The American Resort are in impeccable shape with the greens being the stars. Unlike most Pete Dye courses this one is not overkill on the bunkers. They are in strategic places, but not to the point of ridiculousness. If you are in them the sand is quite fine and getting out is not a two shot proposition. The first hole of real note is No. 5 Tree Stand where the green is guarded by mature trees on both sides that make it appear as if it is impossible to reach, but as usual with Dye it is an optical illusion and there is in fact room to avoid the trees. No. 9 Deer Hunt will make you feel like a deer in the headlights as you try to avoid water, sand and woods on a 400 yard + hole. The canteen at the turn is a welcome sight, serving up great Wisconsin brats and locally brewed Spotted Cow ale.The fun on this course really starts on the back nine as Weeden Creek comes into play on a lot of holes. No. 14 Nature's Course is a stunning hole with a peninsular green surrounded by trouble everywhere. No. 15 Mercy is an all-carry par three with a big green that feeds a good shot to the hole. If you hit a good shot you will get an ego boost because of this. The best hole is the last, Salmon Trap as you must cross the Sheboygan River to reach the green. The best part is that if you don't make it there's a good chance of seeing migrating King salmon in this part of the river. They were certainly there in early October as were the fisherman. After the round make sure you have a pint of Jigger's ale, imported from St. Andrews just for the resort. It will soothe any worries about your score.

The River Course at Blackwolf Run is an excellent test of golf, particularly when the wind is blowing (which it almost always is). The course design is excellent, the course is well-maintained, and the overall operation is well-run. About the only complaint is the price -- greens fees of $270 are on the excessive side. Overall, however, an excellent golf experience.

I'll post this review for Meadows. Wonderful layout with plenty of scenic holes and incredibly well manicured. Greens were better than Straits. We didn't choose a fore caddy, and one would have helped. Be sure to buy a yardage book so you know the layout.

Truly enjoyed both courses, but The River course is much more difficult and having a caddy really helped. Would love to play both courses again.... and probably will.

This was a 24th anniversary dinner, but we weren't really looking for intimate dining. We had a great server who was knowledgeable and attentive, also personable. My wife's stuffed pork chop was superb, my short ribs good, not great. A table of 22 men golfers sat down after we did and the decibel level increased as expected. Nice guys, just loud as one would expect. Pretty, kinda rustic setting.

Very wooded and quite beautiful. Greens are fun. Keep yoiur ball in play. Staff was the best. Love the view from the club house.

We played the Meadows course the day after playing Whistling Straits. That place is designed to be spectacular and is all of that and more. The Meadows course is much more forgiving and provides you with a more natural beauty throughout the winding meadows. Greens are the same as the Straits course, fast with a lot of bends and curves. Beautiful country club type course that the average Joe can afford to play. You won't be disappointed playing this course. First rate clubhouse and fantastic food to boot.

The River and The Meadows are two superb courses at Blackwolf Run. The course is a short 5 minutes from the American Club. The River is solid golf front and back; the Meadows front on very good, but the back is the most interesting. River greens are fast as are the Meadows; keep the ball below the hole if at all possible. Meadows is replay for $30 (cart fee) on the Golf Kohler package. Our group played 36/54/36 on the three days. Pace of play is good, and the hot dogs are the best in the Midwest. Meadows has several holes on the back where a driver off the tee is not the best choice for a long hitter. Friendliest staff and best service; they know how to run a golf complex.

Call ahead if you want a caddy - they are not as available as they are on Whistling Straits. Take a cart and use a forecaddie, though, as the walks from green to tee can be really long!

Blackwolf Run is the kind of place you can come back to time and time again and enjoy both courses. My son and I played a total of 54+ holes on these two courses and loved every minute of it. The holes are beautifully laid out with some really great holes on both courses, especially the River. The River is a challenge and far more enjoyable than Whistling Straits. We really enjoyed the 18 holes that held the Women's Open. If the guys are good, so are the girls!!!!!The staff there couldn't have been nicer. On a replay, they sent us to the back nine of MV to avoid the crush on the first tee. Then on our 11th hole, an assistant Pro came out and suggested that we go over to the River as we had caught up to a junior outing on MV. How many resorts would go out of their way to do that, especially since the River is not part of their free replay offer.Lunch at the clubhouse was fine but they don't have Potato-Leek Soup as they do at WS. When I kidded with the hostess about this glaring weakness, she suggested(in a nice way) that we GO BACK TO WS!!Again, I would play here again and again with an occasional round on the Straits, it's that good.

Booked a golf package with a couple of buddies and got to play all 4 of the Kohler courses. These are pricey courses but the package allowed for replay booking on Meadows Valley for just the cart fee of $30 so that helped. The River Course is one of the most beautiful woodland golf courses that you will ever play, with the newer 9 holes (holes 5-13) truly special. Pick the appropriate set of tees to have the most enjoyable round as it is a very challenging course. The River Course gets all of the publicity but the Meadows Valley course is a fine course in it's own right. Many of the holes have more of a links feel but it is a lovely course with some great holes. Conditioning on both courses is superb - great greens especially. You will find the fairway sand traps to be more of a penalty than at many courses as the sand is softer and the ball settles into it.

This course has hosted a number of championship tournaments and gives you a choice of the Meadows course which is a little more docile and the Rivers course which can be a supreme challenge. I got to see some of both two times, as they were deluged with rain when I had tee times scheduled. The were very resourceful and offered 9 holes on each course which made up the Championship course as it was last played for the LPGA championship. Lots of water, rough and challenging golf. You won't be disappointed.
