caswell county jail

The jail is cool, but doesn't seem to be available for tours. Still, the local,FFA chapter did a great job restoring it as far as we could tell. After we poked around the outside, we walked through the pretty arboretum just behind it. Lovely short stroll before heading off the Gamelands.

We were on our way to Mt. Airy on the back roads and saw this old jail. Of course we had to stop to take pictures. It's right next to the old Poteat School. The jail wasn't open at the time (they do offer tours) and we plan to try it again. It was built in the late 1800s and is in the Romanesque Revival style. In 1906 it contained the only remaining hanging cell in the state.
