Before the statue there's some preliminary fieldwork to be savoured. We love the jagged sections of coastline which overlooks the Gulf of Pilicastro, a 22 km stretch which overlooks two bodies of water, the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas. Arriving by car from the Noce Valley, felt like driving straight into the deep blue sea, which together with the green landscape of the mountains hid it from view. There's lots of wild fennel around which some believe is where the name of the town comes from. Maratea is a shoreline dotted by hidden bays, rocky promontories that punctuate coves, sandy beaches shaded by great pine trees, and islands that break-up the dark blue of the horizon. We love this area. permeated by peace and tranquility. No wonder its a draw-card for nature lovers. There isn't even a cinema!. Vacationing here, is different to say the least, because of its low wattage commercialism....... And i pray they keep it that way. But if you love tramping and climbing or fishing, there are 44 churches, some of which are 12th century, to keep you in the mood. Further uphill is a charming medieval village, where the Great Statue of the Redeemer stands on the summit clinging to the mount. We rented digs at the Hotel Santavenere in Fiumicello. The hotel rests on a promontory overlooking the sea and is surrounded by nature. Its sight-worthy. We had our own private beach which we overlooked from our room furnished in 18th century-style. Fabulous meals are to be had at the hotel and at Locanda della Donne Monache back in Maretea's historic centre all the dishes crafted with a sense of creativity and tradition, resulting in dishes that piqued our curiosity even before we tasted and savoured them.

The drive up there is quite winding and the last few hundred metres of the road are on concrete columns which appeared quite scary especially when we are in a huge bus. The world 2nd largest status of Christ The Redeemer aft the one in Rio. The view is awesome. Simple breathtaking just to admire God's creation.

The view from this place is just stunning, I have a house in the area and I visit here every year. However, this year there was a setback.... I was paying with a note of 50 Euro note on the parking lot under the statue and hadn´t checked the rest I got....and the day after I found out I was given a false 20 euro note! I was told by the locals that this happens especially during the summer season, so be careful!

End of September the road was open all the way to the top so no need to park and walk. The road up wasn't anything like as bad as it had been made out - I quite enjoyed it!Great views, loved that this was there

There is a bus that takes you to Christ the redeemer statue. Amazing view over the coastline. And possible to get a cold drink while you enjoy it.

A bit of a hike up the mountain and then via a bus for the last 200 metres but worth it for the views. Some small shops and a cafe are there if you need it.

We were there at 06.30 in the morning for sunrise. It was great! We had the place completely to ourselves and it was romantic and great to watch the sunrise in complete silence! Watch out for snakes! They are not dangerous but quite big and scary .

A 52' statue of Christ the Redeemer that overlooks the mountains and sea! The ride up is a roller coaster but it was awesome sight.

Even though the statue is recent (1960's) it is huge and very impressive. The view from the mountain is wonderful, and worth the trip.

Maratea is a beautiful town, however to enjoy the best view you have to visit the Cristo Redentore Statue. The statue in fact overlooks the all bay. You can go up the hill by car. You will find a parking space close to the top. Special shuttles will then take you below the statue. The shuttle service runs also during late evening. The view from there is really stunning

It is a must see statue set on the hill above Maratea. Worth it to see the statue itself, although sometimes in cloud! But also great views of the coast from there.

This is the reason we came to Maratea and it didn't disappoint. The road up is challenging but the final view worth every effort. We appreciated that the statue was built by private benefactor.

The access road is beyond belief - like driving up a roller coaster. White-knuckles! Not for the faint hearted but worth it for the adrenalin rush.

This is an amazing statute to see-so tall and peaceful. The drive up to the statue is amazing and the views everywhere are so beautiful.
