Got to be top of the list as a place to visit if bird ID is your forte. Plenty of room for everybody without causing disturbance. Went back last year 20 years after my first trip and it didnt disappoint.

Interesting to see the salt pans - loved the flamingoes which resided there too. Did not see any lorries collecting when we were there but it was good for the children to see where the salt comes from and them to see it in bags being sold on the island

When you drive from Mytiline to Kallonis,in any case you will see this very natural part of the island with salt pan alongwith the state high way.Very interesting to see the salt pan so close.İf you are lucky enough and also if it is the season, you can see many kinds of birds in this area. You can come close with many people in and around this area with their binoculars watching the birds. We were unlucky and able to see a few of them from very far distance.Worth to stop and watch around while driving through this area.

Peaceful here not so many birds about this year ( may ) but we stopped by every other day either on the way out or on the way back.We did see the salt getting taken away by lorrys.

Yes the birds are numerous and interesting, but the salt pan itself is also something that you do not see every day. Rather than making a special trip, you can stop by as the road near the salt pan is on the way to almost every other destination on the island.TIP: Go early or late - not much shade there.

even at a time of year when there wasn't supposed to be much to see, there were Whiskered Terns, Black Storks, Slender Billed Gulls, Marsh Sandpiper and more

This is a good spot for birding, one of the better locations near Kalloni. We spent some time here in April/May 2014. Flamingo, Avocet, Little Tern, Eastern Olivacious Warbler, Hen Harrier, Short Toed Eagle, Elenora's Falcon, Woodchat Shrike to name but a few of the regulars. Watch out for the mosquitoes though! Those wee varmants sure can bite.

We passed through here and the area is large but it was lovely to see the Flamingo's in their natural habitat.

Quiet this year but still the brilliant flamingos were there!!Easy to drive round and hides to visit.

What a place, you can wander, you can stop and take in the beauty around you and you can put many ticks on your bird spotting list. Nothing like it. Also near refreshments.

this place is the best for watching birds, especially flamingos. also the mountain of salt is very impressive to see. a big area where you can spend hours in peace

While crossing the area, we stopped at the salt pans for our kids to get an idea who the salt is harvested from the sea. We faced an extraordinary sight ! Probably a thousand flamingos were taking a rest in the pans !!! The pans themselves are not open to the public, but a guided tour may be a much desired boost to the local economy.

Excellent site for birdwatching and in easy reach of Skala Kalloni.Lots of flamingos, storks, bee-eaters, ruddy shellducks etc

Plenty of space to use car as bird hide, minimising disturbance to birds and ensuring excellent views.

Kalloni Salt Pans lies in the centre of the island and you can't leave Lesvos without visiting this so important for wild life area. It's the shelter for thousands of birds and of course it's protected by Natura 2000.Driving from Mytilene to Kalloni, on your left, you'll find a wooden bird observatory. Here you can watch beautiful pink flamingos and many other birds living peacefully and preparing themselves for their long journeys. At the edge of the pan you can see the mountain of salt produced here.Make sure you'll bring your binocular in order to watch every detail of this little paradise!
