The Sokolski Monastery "Uspenie Bogorodichno" (Monastery of the Assumption) is situated in a very picturesque location in the Balkan Mountain close to the town of Gabrovo. You can get there by car or on foot following the trail, both start from the Ethnographic complex "Etara". The views from the location where the church was built are simply impressive and beautiful. The monastery looks very well maintained and taken care of. In the middle of the courtyard stands a fountain with 8 spouts, built by the famous master-builder Kolyo Ficheto. During the Russian-Turkish War for Liberation, the monastery was used as a hospital. The church is also beautiful inside and outside. A small parking is there in front of the monastery.Highly recommended!

If you are in the region and miss out seeing this monastery, this will be a shame. There are a few places in the region, which are really worth a visit an this is one of them. This monastery is one of the best known in the country, famous for its beautiful setting. It is very well maintained, too.

We've visited many monasteries across Bulgaria and this one really stands out as it is so well kept and in a lovely location. The Church building itself is painted blue which really makes it different to the others. The cemetery for the Nuns and the gardens were well kept and looked after.

We saw about a dozen monasteries across the country and this one was by far the most memorable. In the midst of mountains, it has a timeless magical quality. Also a gorgeous rose garden and natural spring waters.

Once you enter the yard of the monastery, you feel relaxed and you feel the special energy of the place. The monastery is well-maintained, there's a small parking outside. The church is fantastically painted with frescos - inside and outside. The church is on a level below the living quartersad yard, so you need to go down the stairs. Even if you have difficulties walking and you can't, the church is right in front of you so you can admire its facade and the view to the mountain.

We were there in August 2011 - everything around was all green, the flowers were blooming... Amazing place with a really nice atmosphere.

Try not to miss it! The church is hidden because it was built during the las years of the Turkish ugo and it was not to be seen from the outside :) However, it´s quite big!

The Sokolski Monastery is a Bulgarian Orthodox monastery founded in 1833 and named after its founder Yosif Sokolski. It is located 10 km southwest of Gabrovo on the northern slopes of the Balkan Mountains in the Bulgarka Nature Park and is very close, just 4 km, to Architectural ethnographic complex "Etar". The church of Sokolski Monastery contains incredible frescoes and also an icon, which represents the Virgin Mary and Christ and is considered to be miraculous. The monastery has a big yard surrounded by residential and utility buildings and a beautiful garden with flowers. In the centre of the yard, in 1865 the master Kolyu Ficheto constructed a big stone fountain with eight taps. The whole monastery was built during the Bulgarian National Revival. There is no entrance fee to the site, but if you want to take pictures inside the church there is a fee of 10 levs (5 EUR).You can reach Sokolski Monastery driving along the road to Gabrovo and then take the turn to the village of Charkovo and Ethnographic complex “Etar”; follow the signs. Bus transport from Gabrovo is available as well.

Um mosteiro maravilhoso em algum lugar os Balkans. Só para ficar em silêncio e sentir paz de espírito. Vale a pena visitar.
