The castle was commissioned by King Christian 4 for his son, Valdemars who never got to enjoy it because he died in a battle in Poland. So it was given as payment for services to Admiral Neil's Juel in 1678. He captured a lot of Swedish ships in a big naval battle. The atmosphere is " welcome to our house" meaning it's possible to wander through many rooms as long as you respect the notices. There is something there for everyone. We did not like the animal trophy room so we avoided it. The grounds are also good for picnics. It is best accessed by car & is a wonderful experience of history

We visited Valdemars Slot midweek. In company with a Danish friend who was keen to see it too. It is very much a family home, with comfortable furniture representing a lifestyle most of us don't even dream about . It is presented in a very relaxed manner, with no exclusion zones, just a polite request not to touch the baubles . The formal dining room, was set for a magnificent dinner , complete with Royal Copenhagen dinner settings & silver service , fabulous French chandeliers &. the menu cards depicted an 8 course dinner served for 20 people in 1938.... Real atmosphere....The family photos scattered about in most rooms gave an impression of familiarity & comfort. The kitchens were really interesting , displaying cooking utensils, pots, pans, moulds, cookers & the living quarters of the staff over the years . Overall it was well worth the visit, until we reached the very top floor , where a disturbing collection of magnificent animals ( stuffed) killed for sport , was displayed though a number of rooms. I just had to,leave at that point , & feel that this display was completely out of sync with the rest of the estate . Would recommend a visit here, but avoid the top floor !

Interesting but overpriced! Enjoyed the layout where you can walk amongst furniture and get up close, as long as you don't touch. It gives the feeling of being in someones home, not a museum.Wonderful collection of hunting trophies but exhibits of brown and polar bears, rhinos and other endangered animals shot in within last 20-30 yr not acceptable in todays world! There was a wonderful photography exhibition of African animals, just seemed a bit of an anomaly with what was displayed on the top floors.

As a resident of the Island, Taasinge I have seen Valdemar Slot and its surrounding many times of the year. And it is not just in the summer it is enjoyable. But in the summer with the activities and concerts it makes it worth planing for the dates of the months where the activites happens. You can see the events and prices on this website. http://valdemarsslot.dk (it might have an english button otherwise google translate)There is an entrance fee to the castel in itself, but the surrounding areas around is for free, and perfect for picnics in the garden, in the forest or on the beach.

We visited Valdemars in Sept and thoroughly enjoyed it. The 3 floors of the Historic house really were well preserved and also looked to be loved and lived in. We really got the feeling that the family had just stepped out for a while. The family photos are a good touch too. The rooms were decorated to reflect different eras of the history of the house. We did not enjoy the upstairs Hunting Trophy Museum. If it had been historically connected to the house maybe, but these were taken in the last 25 or so years, long after some of these animals were endangered.

Apart from the scenery around the front of Valdemars Slot everything is VERY average. There is a nice small beach & the water is very clean & fine to swim around in.The best thing with Valdemars Slot is, if you want to you can sail to it direct from the town of Svendborg.(6 months a year)This a very beautiful sailing trip &drops you off right in the Castle waters. The old ship is called HELGE & has an open top, lovely on a summers day. The visit to the castle it's self should not take more than an hour,on a nice day take a walk around the area it's nice &of course you have the beach & the sailing trip(takes about 45 mins a few stops on the way).

Neither the castle, nor the gardens are something really special. The castle itself consists of two floors. On the first one there are some old rooms with old stuff. Old plates, old furniture etc.. stuff that even your grandma might have! There are also paintings of the old owners and pictures (I mean color photographs) of the newer or current owners everywhere. On the second floor there is the hunting museum where you can see a large variety of hunting rifles and many preserved animal carcasses that are really impressive if you like hunting. There are also many kinds of fish and birds. The entrance fee is 85dkk with no reduced ticket for students, and photography in the castle is forbidden. In my opinion there is no reason for you to go there unless you are really into hunting! The egeskov castle is a better choice.

The best New Years eve celebration ever. The food, wines, dancing, athmosphere superb. All the rooms were lit with candle lights as were the grounds. The fireworks at midnight were memorable.

Uninspiring and boring grounds and castle. Only interesting if you're into stuffed animals as there was a museum in the building. Lousy cafe as well.

Has beautiful gardens but was unfortunately under renovation and things were a bit messy. A beautiful place none-the-less and somewhere worth visiting if in the area.

A very pleasant experience at the castle and in Cafe Æblehaven - but DO NOT EAT at the restaurant under the church. Completely lack of kindness and bad serving at VERY high prices
