If you want to wander in peace and quiet this cemetery is worth a stop. Huge old section and lovely views. Great spot to let the kids stretch their legs.

Cemeteries are rarely a tourism attraction unless they contain memorials to celebrities and heroes of the past. However Buninyong's cemetery warrants a stop if you're driving between Ballarat and Buninyong because it is old by Australian standards (it was only the second registered cemetery in Victoria) and quite attractive. It's set above road level so has a bit of a rural outlook and the mature trees around it create a sheltered feel. It's also well kept, so a lot more inviting to stroll around than many country cemeteries. There are gravestones dating back to the colonial era (Buninyong grew into a village during the 1840s). There's said to be a Chinese section but I didn't see it. In the Old Buninyong Library in the town you can consult burial records.A few hundred metres from the cemetery, at the corner of Hiscocks Gully Road, you can look out for a 1901 monument to the 1851 discovery of gold in the area.
