There are several good reasons to visit Nimbin Markets - it's a lovely green area under huge trees, it's a great space to meet friends and people watch, it's child / dog friendly, there's an interesting range of artisan stalls, plus there's always the chance something might be happening on the outdoor stage - there's been some excellent music recently.But the main reason we go regularly these days is the quality of the food stalls. Sunday lunch becomes really difficult to choose between the wonderful Persian food stall, the great stall that serves it's curries in wrapped roti cones, the just baked on the spot pizza stall and the goat curry stall. And those are just a few of your options. And of course then to finish up there are the coffee and cake stalls, and the local friends who sell their homemade cordials at the markets - blissful on hot days :)

And what a shame you didn't look a little further past your judgement to see more. You see, as the mental health services have shut down from lack of funding all over the country, many health professionals in this area tell folks with mental health issues to head to Nimbin, as they'll be cared for. One of the aspects of this historic town that has been a living experiment in community living for nearly 40 years, is respect and compassion for all. So many people who would find themselves on the nasty end of human nature going through a personal break down, find refuge in our town. Except for aggression or violence, all diversity is respected here. So, many of the people who you judged as in 'Extreme poverty, drug and alcohol addiction, nervous pushers trading amidst the signs prohibiting such activities...' might well have been some of the folk who find sanctuary in Nimbin. Yes we have drugs in Nimbin. Like the rest of the towns in the country. What's different here, is that it's above board, instead of being brushed under rugs. Because of this, we find there's people moving to this area to avoid the nasty meth amphetamine scene that's lurking in the back streets of average Australia. As well as having drugs available the same as every other town in the country, we are also the home of Hemp Education - a timely topic if ever there was one, in the face of cannibas oil curing cancers and diseases, as well as being a solution for climate change. We also have the only free public pool in the country, the friendliest bowling club, community owned venues, and not a single multi national represented in the whole town, and we actively keep it that way. We're the home of Forest Protection, and most recently, played a big role in the Bentley Blockade. And at present, we lead the entire Western World in areas of Self Organisation, Sustainability, and Sovereignty. We have a lot to be proud of in our town, and I'm so sorry that you didn't manage to see it :)

Thank you so much for your review, and to tell you the truth, I think there's a lot of folk who live in Nimbin who wish that they'd never left town, and it had stayed a little hippy paradise forever....but sadly, the urban monoculture soldiered on, and a lot of us just ran away here to pretend :)

Nimbin Markets is a great community assett where quality local musicians provide entertainment free of charge for most of the day, (every 4th Sunday, and 5th Sundays when they occur).Quality organic food and coffee are available, as well as an assortment of unusual odds and ends. Nimbin village is a small country town, so if your expecting big city glitz, perhaps we aren't for you. If you want to look deeper, Nimbin has a vibrant history of social upheaval, environmental credentials, alternative thinking and a more tolerant view of the main stream than the main stream has of Nimbin.Nimbin has a lot to offer those with the intellectual capacity to see passed their own bigotry.

It might be time to come back and visit again, and review your review :) The market has changed a lot since then.......

As a college student in Robina on exchange for three months, a trip to the little town of Nimbin which is just about an hour and a half from my university was on my to-do list.When my tour guide described it as the "little town with a big reputation" I vastly underestimated the word "little." The main street, which is the attraction element of the place, is exactly that... a street. A couple of hours maximum is all the time you'll need to wander the shops and browse through all of the unique trinkets, second-hand clothes and natural remedies they sell. Though there are many of them, they seem to sell similar items so I didn't feel it was necessary to go into every single one.The museum is a must-see, however. It was meant to be a second-hand shop and, according to my tour guide, no one was interested in buying any of the items so they turned it into a museum. It's full to the brim with art work, graffiti, trinkets, album covers, etc. If you want to truly observe every little item in there, you could easily spent an hour or two in here alone.If you're not into the kinds of crop the garden here (if you catch my drift) that is pretty much all there is to see in Nimbin. If you are, although it is illegal, it is more than easy to obtain. If we were to walk down the shop-lined street and pass 10 people, at least five out of those 10 would have attempted to sell us some of their "crop."So is it a must-see? In my opinion, yes. The scenery on the way is beautiful and its certainly unique. However, I wouldn't plan on spending more than an afternoon there and its not somewhere I, or anyone of the 25 other students I traveled with, are itching to re-visit.

Estava ansiosa com o diferente estilo de vida que encontraria em Nimbin. Eu estava apenas de passagem e, infelizmente, algumas lojas estavam fechadas no dia que visitei, mas mesmo assim consegui apreciar a variedade de artesanato e cores daquele lugar. Além disso, achei extremamente interessante a preocupação da cidade com o meio ambiente. É um lugar que te mostra uma realidade inimaginável, não deixe de conhecer.
