An amazing journey through a 16th century settlement. Great buildings and beautiful sights, but be careful, cars don't stop to let pedestrians cross the street and that could be a challenging thing

Good area for urban tourists, or historical buffs. Safety is above average in this area for this city.

This area is full of wonderful old buildings, each with such a history. We also enjoyed museums such as the Amber and Larimer Museum--a lot to see and enjoy within walking of our hotel.

Zona Colonial, the old part of Santo Domingo. Beautiful and safe, the central street "El Conde" is a classical turist trap. Do not eat or drink there! Most of the historical buildings you will find around the waterline.

Loved walking around, seeing the sites, people and the ambiance.Square at the east end of El Conde provided much entertainment and people watching!

The old town of Santa Domingo is amazing.. filled with history and some breath taking sights.. we had a very charismatic tour guide take us thru the streets and tell us all there is to know about this wonderful historic section of town.. really worth a visit.

If you find a tourist guide you can ask them to show you around the Zona Colonial. It is an old part of town with beautiful architecture, from hundreds of years ago. There are some nice places to eat.

So much history and such a beautiful area. Wander a little up past all the touristy stuff and you'll find the ruins of the (supposedly) first stone building of the new world. Pretty awesome. And wander a little more and you'll find a bustling China town.

This zone is very nice for having a great time. You can always enjoy the area with many historical places and old architecture. You can find many shops and restaurants.

The museum was excellent - the rest ??? Lots of run down buildings, narrow streets, good restaurants, lots of shopping, and lots of people willing take your money so beware

We wandered though the big gift shop in the middle of town, and bought several things. They accepted USD and pesos, which was nice, we were able to use up some of the cash we had without paying he exchange fee. They wouldn't haggle much, but they did give us a basket and say anything you fit in the basket, 30% off. They also have rum and cigars Here, don't buy them from the gift shop. They've got a lot of the cigars you can buy anywhere, and they want a premium for them.BUY CIGARS FROM LA LEYENDA DEL CIGARO! They were a little off the main drag, but still in the colonial zone. They had a guy rolling cigars, and they let me try a few before I bought, after I decided on my favorites, they cut me a great deal on some great cigars. They also let me pay in USD. All in all, if you're in Santo Domingo, the colonial zone is a must, go check it out!

Have breakfast in the Plaza Colon at the corner restaurant. Several museums close by and walk the Conde, it's traffic free. Cheaper but good restaurants are along the walk off the plaza toward the river.

Souvenir shopping is great. Just be careful, the sale peeps are quite grabby. Always.. always.. ask for a lower price. You will be amazing how low they can go.

My wife and I spent a day walking the Zona Colonial according to the 2014 Lonely Planet walking tour route and enjoyed it and the history it represented. We feel though, that the route should have led south to the Paseo Presidente Billini (near 19 de Marzo) where we found a watering hole overlooking the ocean, a humongous statue overlooking the water, and some cannons and some military structures not listed. In our opinion, this should at least be shown on the map as an option.A day in Zona Colonial is mandatory if you're in the area. No one will speak a lick of english to you all day.
