Maryland history is written all over Mt St Mary's, its neighboring community of Emmitsburg, the Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton....visit them all, and you know you are walking on sacred ground.

Mount St. Mary's ("The Mount") is set on the western slopes of the mountains with a full view of the valley below. A series of buildings devoted to academics, residential life and administration dot the hillside while a new athletic complex with a gym, stadium and playing fields fills out the campus across the highway. An imposing statue of the Virgin Mary stands atop The Mount with outstretched hands to offer symbolic protection. The college enrolls 2,000+ undergraduate and graduate students with the adjacent seminary much smaller. Mount St. Mary's continues to offer a very good education in line with the long history of Catholic commitment to preparing students for leadership in a variety of fields.

We happens upon this campus driving through the area. We decided to go for a visit and enjoyed exploring the grounds and buildings. What a lovely place to go to school! Just behind is the St. Mary's Grotto of the Lourdes, a must visit also.

Set in the Catoctin Mountains in Emmitsburg, PA the grotto is a peaceful place to hike and enjoy the gardens and drink from the "healing" waters. Free to walk around; there are two small chapels and the grotto itself in a gorgeous setting. Find it by following the huge carillon with a golden statue of Mary. Log House and history of the early missionaires that settled the area and Mother Seton, who was the teacher of the children at the beginnings of the school. Lots of statues and religious symbols. Grounds are very well kept. You should not be detered from this lovey setting just because it is religious.

folks at 56 and amture i missed out on a fine experience in 1972 as for my freshman yr i was terribly homesick and yes at 18 developed a drinking problem that i quit drinking for ever at 23, my terrible experiece was my internal demons.however graduating at 36 the reality is the mount was a fine place with alot to do for extra curricular activities.i just was nt ready at the time .although my own daughter went elsewhereany parent could be proud to have there child graduate from the mount and ps the following yr ileft,it became co ed which would have been nice and also opened a bar on campus which folks,,i have nothing against drinking ,nothing at all, but a bar does nt belong on campus and im not sure its there in 2008

Mount St. Mary's is a charming little liberal arts college in the foothills of the Catoctin Mountains, themselves foothills of the Blue Mountains. Its handsome campus lies at the precise junction of a quaint farming area just south of Gettysburg, and the foothills themselves. A towering golden statue of the Virgin Mary overlooks the campus protectively. The students clearly are proud of their school; they're unusually friendly; and the campus has great unity and spirit. The seminary, considered one of the best, adjoins the main campus but is functionally mostly separate. All the Mount lacks is ... a football team!
