Driving along the Mohawk Trail we came across the town of Shelburne Falls. Driving through the town we came to the glacial falls. What a view! In the winter with snow all around you can take in all sights of the rushing water, potholes, river, and town!

This would be up to the person if they would enjoy it or not as some may look at it as only holes in rocks but others may enjoy the history and beauty of it. It is unique and photographic. The area is fenced off so you can't get a really close look. Free parking with shops and eateries near by.

I had never seen these potholes before. You can walk right up next to the swirling waters. Worth the visit and the walk around the town.

A very interesting geological phenomenon the likes of which I had never seen before. It isn't particularly well signposted or advertised but definitely look out for it if in Shelburne Falls

We stopped by to see this since it was a short distance from the Bridge of Flowers. We did enjoy the quaint shops and picturesque atmosphere of Shelburne Falls but I wouldn’t make a special trip just for the glacial potholes. There is a viewing area at the end of Deerfield Avenue. The potholes are interesting to view and vary in size and color. They are located beneath a hydroelectric dam. We were told that at certain times when a light flashes and a horn sounds that water floods into the area but we didn’t see this. Perhaps that would have made for a more interesting view with a waterfall like appearance but then again you’d miss the “potholes”.

the way the rocks are formed is truly interesting.its very hard to describe but the way they were left from the glaciers is wort seeing.

Quite a geological phenomenon - if you are in town definitely visit it - but the backdrop is not amazing a bit industrial

Worth checking out if you are already in town, or are interested in geology or geocaching. Otherwise a little underwhelmed.

We love this place! It's one of our favorites. My husband and I visit a few times each year when visiting the Bridge of Flowers (see my other review). There are shops to have coffee near by, and it's great for anyone who likes to take pictures, especially in the Fall (see some pictures below). If you want to make a day of it you could also take a short drive into Greenfield before or after visiting, where you can eat lunch or dinner and take a short walk to Poet's Seat Tower (see my other review). Deerfield is also not too far away where you can enjoy Yankee Candle's flagship store, and a drive or hike up Mount Sugarloaf (see my other review). Enjoy...it's a beautiful, peaceful place for a day out alone or as a couple.

Those big holes in the Hoosick riverbed are just so interesting, some as big as 25 feet. Taking this in would delight any child, as would the bridge of flowers nearby. This is a neat town.

Happened to stop for lunch in Shelburne Falls and saw the sign for the glacial potholes and had to check it out. It was the neatest thing I've seen...very unusual. Amazing to see what nature creates. It would have been nice if they had a little more information at the site, luckily I was with someone who could explain how they were formed and give a little background. It was definitely worth checking out.

I guess something one should see once in his life, if you happen to be in the neighborhood. But unless you're a geologist (pro or amateur), it's just a quick stop to learn a little.

I've viewed this area several times in the recent past. Apparently years ago people were allowed to go down to the potholes, and even swim in the area. I guess if I had experienced this I would be somewhat disappointed now. However, that not being the case, I have enjoyed seeing them from the viewing area. Definitely worth a quick visit.Tip: Be sure to visit the Lamson Cutlery Factory store which you will see on the other side of the dam. They have been making cutlery there since 1837. It's quality stuff!

Before the river was tamed by a dam, this crook in the flow, exacerbated by an acute drop, created a swirl of water that caused the granite to wear -- thus the Potholes. You get a sense of the rugged character of this ancient region before European settlement when you see them. If you're lucky, the sluice gates will be opened, and you will see the fury of Nature. Seeing them takes little time. Do not miss.

They are really cool to look at but you have to view them behind a metal bar. I wish there was a way to see them up close and personal.
