A visit to Ripley's "Thermometer Man" is not for everyone. The home museum is in an outbuilding at Richard Porter's house in Onset, MA. It's small; it's cramped; it's bursting with a collection of over 5000 thermometers, so many that Richard holds the Guiness world record for the most thermometers in one place. I'd call a visit with Dick Porter a walk on the wild side. That being said, I'd recommend the World's Only Thermometer Museum to anybody who likes a little something different. The former science teacher is a lecturer and author and he's fun to talk with. He loves his collection and is eager to share his knowledge. Every shelf is full and every wall is covered with thermometers. All you have to do is to notice one and he starts telling you its history. Call ahead because Dick opens the museum by chance or appointment. You'll be glad you did!
