The museum was actually closed the day I went (they were working on exhibits), but the librarian upstairs called down to Cheryl (the very knowledgeable and interesting Collection Assistant) and she let us in. This small museum has some great displays - I particularly liked the exhibit on Bering Sea art. A new larger facility is being built, a new director has been hired,so look for bigger and better when they get into their new space.

Take the time to visit the museum in Nome. They have so many interesting items from the Gold Rush and the Iditarod. It was a tiny little area but they pack the most possible in. The hours seem short also, so check it out and plan ahead to be sure you get to see it.

What a fun little museum! All about the gold rush, dog sled races, Wyatt Earp and other Nome history. It is free -- there is a box asking for $1. The staff was friendly, and obviously love what they do there. The public library is upstairs.

A beautifully curated and displayed narrative of indigenous settlement and culture, and the coming of gold seekers during the early gold rush to Nome. Some was very personalised, and very interesting indeed to someone from the other side of the world. An excellent way to appreciate the origins and history of the town.

The museum is the only one in town and is the museum for anyone wanting to learn more of the history of the Nome region. The museum houses important artifacts from the surrounding area, information on the Iditarod sled dog race and all of the local history of the Gold Rush of Nome, Alaska. Great stop for anyone that has time in Nome.

Attended a wonderful informal lecture with Howard Farley, a founder of the Iditarod. Very interesting. The museum has many artifacts and a must visit to fully appreciate the history of Nome and heritage of her citizens.

There are so many things in this museum that it is impossible to see all in one visit. Many relics of the early gold rush days along with artifacts of the early natives.

No visit to Nome is complete without a stop in to experience the Carrie M. McLain Museum in downtown Nome. Learn about the gold rush, mushing history, and discover the amazing local native culture. The curators are some of the most friendly people you will ever meet. They spend extra time with all visitors.

If you visit Nome, this museum should definitely be on your itinerary. Located in the basement of the City Library on Front Street, this museum gives excellent history of the founding and boomtown growth of Nome during its Gold Rush days. There's also excellent display of artifacts associated with Nome's dog sled racing heritage - including racing champion Siberian "Fritz" stuffed and on display. This museum is full of native American (Eskimo) artifacts, historical information and is very informative and worth a visit. Especially when you consider the admission is free.
