We just spent 6 nights in the Whip-Poor-Will A-frame cabin at RRO. What a cool cabin - we all loved it and it worked out perfectly for our family of 4. The kids stayed in the bedroom downstairs and my husband and I stayed in the loft. The property also had some nice trails and good exploring - the kids found a cool salamander up by the little pond. This was our first time to the Red River Gorge area. There was so much for us to do! Red River Gorge has some beautiful hiking trails with amazing views and rock formations. Natural Bridge State Park was also beautiful. Recommend doing a day canoe/kayak trip down the Red River. Craig helped us arrange the canoe trip which was great. We also tried ziplining and checked out the Kentucky Reptile Zoo. Next time maybe we will try some rock climbing!

Our family vacation this year was a 6 day adventure trip around Kentucky. One of our choices for an adventure was outdoor rock climbing at the "Red". My husband, daughter (11 y/o) and myself have rock climbed indoors for a few years but wanted to experience real rock. We only had a half a day to climb and now wish that we set aside more time because it was simply an amazing experience. We hired a guide through RRO and he took us to a great spot. We had to hike uphill for about 10 minutes but this was a great warm up for the climbing. He did a great job balancing the different climbing levels and was great in getting our daughter to finish an entire route even though she was getting scared. Booking the trip with RRO was easy, the location was easy to find, and we even walked away with a zucchini and a squash from the owner himself. Great guide, great company.

I hired a mountain guide to spend the afternoon climbing the nice cliffs in Red River Gorge and I had a fantastic experince. His name was Dan and he guided me through these cliffs. We climbed together four different trad routes. His climbing level was very good and his guidind skills were awesome. Security was assured all the time and he learned me some techniques I was not used to use.Thank you very much!

Red River Outdoors is under new ownership. We take great pride in making sure that the cabins are thoroughly cleaned. The dust and debris situation is no longer an issue. Both portable floor fans and air conditioner work. Due to the nature of the cabin, it is challenging to heat it when it gets cold outside (below 30). The cabins are seasonal and not properly insulated for below freezing temps.

Make sure to buy a trail guide book. The views are spectacular but some of the trail can be quite challenging.

Red River Outdoors is under new ownership. We stop renting the boats out when the water level gets low. It is not an enjoyable trip when you have to drag the boat half of the time. Also, the dragging causes damage to the boats. When the Red River is to low for a float, we do rent out boats and car top carriers so you can go and enjoy Mill Creek Lake and the Kentucky River and create your own adventure.

This adventure made the memory for our vacation. We just arrived home from Slade, Kentucky which is only six hours from St. Louis and one hour south of Lexington. We have been getting away with our three teenagers over Thanksgiving weekend for the last few years. We have bouldered before, but never had gear on except for an indoor climbing wall. After a short lesson,My husband and myself finished the first three sections of the wall. We are not in shape. It was not hard, but it was exciting being that high up and "learning the ropes". My three kids finished the next two sections which required more upper body strength. They loved it. If we had done this the first day, I think we would have returned to try a guided trip and clinic on climbing. 35.00 was worth it. I recommend this for an outdoor kind of family who like to expose their kids to all things. They must be at least ten years old and follow directions well. We stayed at a cabin called Sunset Falls which had a great view.
