WE decided to do this walk. We have done it a couple of times before. The views are AMAZING!! We got to see some really nice homes. We get to see Winslow Homer's house from a distance. The trail is great. We sat on the rocks in a few places so that i could get pictures of the waves crashing on the rocks. We had a great time doing this walk. We parked down at Ferry Beach and walked up to Prout's Neck. Wish there was parking closer to the trail, but that is okay.

The Cliff Walk is just steps from the historic Black Point Inn. You walk around the edge of the ocean which can be a bit rough every now and then. Gives you great views. There's one area that I've seen people having a picnic at. No tables and you sit on rocks. If you go all the way around you can see Winslow Homer's old house. Could take you 1-2 hours to walk it. Parking is difficult and there is no public parking so have a meal at the Black Point Inn and then you'll be able to park and walk.

We sought out this walk after reading TA reviews. Following the advise of other reviewers, we had lunch at the Black Point Inn Resort (it was very good and fairly reasonable) and was able to park there and ask for directions to the Cliff Walk -- which, basically, is right across the lawn from the steps in front of the Inn between the two homes. There is a sign that reminds you this is Black Point Inn property and that properties on either side of this short path is private. At the end of the path, there is a road. Turn right and go to the right of the stone shed. You are at the beginning of the walk. The walk is narrow-ish with roots and rocks sticking up, but not dangerously. About 1/4 way in, you hit a rocky beach, but the path is fairly smooth anyway. At this point, we weren't sure if the walk was an up-and-back or circular, so we asked a nearby gentleman. He explained that the walk is about 2 miles and is, indeed, circular and, at the end, the path seems to end on someone's lawn and to just walk through "like you belong there." He mentioned a boardwalk through a bird sanctuary, but we didn't find it. When we got to the end, we followed the road back to the Black Point Inn. The whole thing was well-worth it!

My husband and I had heard about this Cliff Walk and wanted to check it out, but it was hard to find where it started. So we asked around and found out there is an entrance to the walk near The Black Point Inn. The BP Inn will allow you to park in their lot if you are staying there or are dining there, so we decided to stop in and have a small lunch first. (otherwise you have to park at the public town beach and walk down the road to the walk entrance) The Inn is beautiful and the resturant has amazing views of the ocean. There is seating inside and outside. The food was very good too. After lunch we walked to the path entrance which was right next to the inn. The walk took about an hour and we kept stopping along the way to take pictures and collect seashells. The walk trail is not paved (dirt and rocks) or very wide, so it would be hard to do it with a stroller. There is no fence between the path and cliff so you may want to be careful with very small children. But it has amazing views and was well worth checking out. I highly recommend it!

This walk, created by Winslow Homer's brother, is a jewel for the community, but it is not to be shared. While the walk is public, the property surrounding it is private. The walk Is located In a very upscale neighborhood and all the lanes leading to the walk are marked "private" or "for residence use only". One option is to stay at the Black Stone Inn and that will give you access - a pricey proposition. Otherwise, the inn's limited parking is marked for guest use only. There are two public beaches. The Ferry Beach parking lot was marked "for permit holders only". Scarborough Beach is further away but appears available for a fee. Another contributor says you must scramble up rocks to access the walk from this beach, so one would assume one should be in pretty good shape to get there from here. Our solution was that I dropped my husband off at the trailhead and picked him up when he called me since he is the photographer in the family. He says it was a lovely walk, but probably more so when the waves are "angry", which they weren't when he visited. In a nutshell, I'm sure there are equally or nicer places to visit in Maine without the hassle or frustration.

We went on a Sunday and had plans to have dinner at the Black Point Inn - Chart Room. What an amazing dinner! From the Black Point Inn walk to the end of the road. When you are at the end of the road that is where the path starts. You need to walk down a private drive about 10 steps and you will see the path, its on the left. It was not easy to find.My daughter is 13 and we had an amazing walk. The walk was so worth it. It was a Million dollar view the entire walk. The path comes out around 2 miles away. It exits at Beach Rd about 3 blocks from Black Point in. Total walk was maybe 2 1/2 miles but could be less. I would recommend it to anyone with kids over the age 7. Not a walk if you are unsure on your feet. I also would not go if it was raining or just rained. It would be muddy and not as much fun. Today it was 70 degrees and we started the walk at 4:30 pm.

We were a bit nervous to follow Joe P's directions (below, October 2012) to the Cliff Walk . . . it seemed convoluted, and we hated to end up frustrated with four kids in tow, but the promise of breathtaking views lured us in. I'm so glad we made the attempt. It may be difficult to envision, but once you are there, his instructions are spot-on, and you will be rewarded for your efforts with a charming pathway along the rocky cliffs, sometimes close to the edge (our youngest is 10, and it made me a bit anxious), sometimes meandering through raspberry bushes and morning glories, but always within view of the sea. It's not only great masters who are inspired by this place; it was truly a highlight of our family's New England adventure.

We used to do the cliff walk frequently and really enjoyed it. However, in our recent attempt with family visiting from out of town, we were very disappointed that there is absolutely no place to park. We tried to park at the post office but were told it too was private! This "exclusive" neighborhood has just lost my vote as a great trip. I will stay in my hometown of Saco, where we "gasp" have free open parking for all to visit our wonderful beach!

The 45 minute walk starting at Checkley Point near "the Ark", the Homer family house, past the Winslow Homer Studio, past amazing views of the sea and finishing at the Prout's Neck Bathing beach is a fabulous boost for the spirit. The views are fantastic and are reminiscent of many of Winslow Homers famous paintings such as Cannon Rock. If you look inland you can observe many of the fine summer homes of Prout's Neck, some of which are fabulous, others would likely make Homer roll in his grave. The walk anywhere else in the world would be regarded as easy, however, with the obesity and litigation problems of the US might be rated as moderate.

Whenever we have guests in town, the Cliff Walk on Prouts Neck is often a destination. Spectacular views of rugged coast and an opportunity to walk out on the rocks and see where Winslow Homer got a lot of inspiration. The end of the walk goes right in front of Winslow Homer's studio (contact Portland Museum of Art for tour information) which is has recently been restored. We like going after a storm as the waves are usually huge. The photo I've attached was after Superstorm Sandy and the water was very high, even though it was not high tide. Park at Scarborough Beach and walk the beach down to the old pump house and scramble up the rocks to the walk. You can then return on the road for more views to Pine Point.

for a longer walk parking can be made at ferry beach parking lot. walk the beach to the left, around the point you can see Black Point Inn. follow the beach to a boardwalk across the street from the inn. at the main road cross the street and go around the gate on the road to the left. follow this road to the trailhead around the corner. at the end of the cliff walk follow the paved road back to the inn and retrace your steps down the beach to your vehicle.

Harder trail than advertised. Some spectacular views. Difficult to do a loop. Wear good walking shoes.
