I literally stumbled upon Schmidt's under the J train one afternoon after a job I had in that part of Queens. Wow. I couldn't believe my senses. It was like taking a step back in time. The smell of REAL chocolate being molded into Easter bunnies and other assorted treats was intoxicating. The hexagon-tiled floors from another era and the wood-framed display cabinets are things you just don't see anymore. Dozens and dozens of chocolate goodies made on site fill the display counters and you just don't know where to look first. I wanted to buy the whole store, or at least one of everything!! Bring a cooler if you don't live nearby so the chocolate doesn't melt! Actually, I think they ship but you miss the experience of the place if you don't go there and see it for yourself. It is worth the trip to check out Schmidt's which opened in 1925. Needless to say, the chocolate is out of this world. Willy Wonka has nothing on Schmidt's!
