After hiking to the summit of Mt marcy, finally at the 6.8 mile marker back to base a random hiker suggested we trek out to Avalanche Lake and pass on our way back (which would made our DAY hike a whopping 20 miles)- was well worth the muscle aches I would experience the next day! It was beautiful, with pretty cool planks to walk on attached to the rocks over the lake. Definitely a must see

Looking for an amazing day hike??.Try the Avalanche Lake hike from the adirondak loj.Total length is about 4 miles. The first two miles from the loj to marcy dam are quite easy and uneventful but soon turns into a beautiful ascent that runs brookside for for about a mile with a few off trail lean-to that are well postioned for a rest. Then starts a moderately steep climb for a half mile or so before leveling out.Trail takes you directly past blow down from storm Irene in 2011....amazing to see the devastation from this event.Outstanding cliff walls line the trail from there and soon you are standing on north shore of Avalanche lake with amazing view. This hike will take a good part of your day and will give you a good work-out despite the modest distance....well worth it for something very unique.

This is a very beautiful mountain lake hemmed in by Mt. Colden and Avalanche Mtn. There are several ways to get to it but one is at the end of a long slog up Misery Hill.
