If you have kids into military or even war video games this place is perfect for you. Actual chopper you can go in, military jeep to ride on and he loved the tank thing...Plenty of guns to view and other things...

I actually had a class at the museum, and on lunch break, I walked through. I was so impressed (and I didn't get to see everything) that I went back again with my wife. They have a very large collection of military weaponry, uniforms, and vehicles. There is so much to see and so much to read about the history of Iowa military. You will not be disappointed. You will need ID at the gate to Camp Dodge and they can give you directions to the museum.

Took my son here for some military history and so he could work on a school project. Had a great time even though it was raining. Toured the museum with our guide who was every knowledgeable about every thing in the building. Thanks to the staff. Fun Day...

I thought it would be much more about Iowans in the military, maybe more about Iowans (names?) who died during active duty. Seemed to be more of a general military museum with a Iowa tilt.Kids enjoyed it, just not what I expected. Was looking forward to find info about relatives (Iowans) who died in action, info wasn't there.

All about Iowans in the military starting with the Civil War. Rotating exhibits so you'll see something new each time. Static display to the North of the museum - there is a little parking lot up there as well. Some hands on items for the kids. Also a little exhibit on the Iowa Patrol. When you leave, head up to NW Beaver Ave to see a few more static items and the old main gate. Great view of the area as it's on top of a hill. Yes, free admission (donations excepted) and on military base so bring a photo ID. We spent 2.5 hours.

The Iowa Gold Star Museum is located at Camp Dodge and it's well worth the trip. We had a great time learning about the military history of the area.

Can't believe I waited so long to visit. Very nice little museum, very clean, not very big, but very well put together. Especially nice to see some memoribilia I helped construct during Dest Storm on display, I was amazed how well preserved it was. They even had pictures of the sign we built next to our tent in the desert of Saudi Arabia. Brought a lot of good memories back. Keep adding items.

Free. Wonderful displays that cover all U. S. Military involvement from the revolutionary war to the present. This is a working military base and you will need your I.D.'s. Ask directions at front gate because the signs are small and they are working on the roads.

Few people are probably aware that the Camp Dodge National Guard base in Johnston Iowa has a museum of military history. The bulding is fairly new and the self guided tour starts in order of the birth of the United States. There is no admission charge. However, any cash doantion is appreciated. There is much to see here. Weapons from all eras as well as a really cool outdoor static display. Lots of tanks and guns and such. There are also helicopters and fighter jets. This is a very laid back place and one is sure to benefit from having been here. Because of the outdoor display I would recommend trying to come when the weather is fair. Also. Bring a picture ID and leave the motorcycle at home unless you know the rules for riding on a military base.

On Camp Dodge, the museum is a military one. It's small, but informative and I plan on going back again this summer to see how things are progressing. It will be well worth another trip.
