Took friends up the hike to the high falls on Pigeon River. Amazing view, nice place to get a break from the heat and be sure to stop at the lookout on the right hand side of the road just outside of Grand Portage.

Nice place for a stopover. Very friendly people and helpful. Would advise all that are travelling south to visit. Lots to buy and look at plus the conveniance of a duty free for coming home.

I did this one twice: With backpack in Oct 2011 and in Sept 2012 with a 65 pound canoe and two packs totaling about that same amount. Both times we stayed at Fort Charlotte--the campsites are very nice. We hiked out the first time around; each way took about 4-5 hours. It's somewhat easier going back to Lake Superior since the trail rises some 700 feet in elevation. The second time we canoed the Pigeon River on out way to Kenora, Ontario (about 450 miles). It took much longer (all day) with the canoe since we had to double trip most of the way--just not up to carrying that much weight that far. Fall is a great time--less traffic and few or no bugs. This is a rather rigorous hike due to the distance and elevation rise. Not for rookies or couch potatoes. Enjoy your trip.

We walked 1/2 mile to see the falls. I was dubious at first, but it was worth the walk. Very beautiful.

What a nice stop on a road trip to stretch and have a peaceful break from the boarder crossing and drive.

My boyfriend and I hiked the Grand Portage Trail at the end of June 2012. We camped at the end at Fort Charlotte - didn't see a person for two days. VERY remote location. The trail is VERY muddy and thick, dense forest. Not known for it's views, rather the quickest route from Lake Superior to a navigable portion of the Pigeon River - very historic trail, used by the Indians and then, the Voyageurs. There are two campsites here, only accessible by the Grand Portage or by canoe/kayak. They have elevated wooden stands to pitch your tent and a vault toilet. Was quite the experience!
