Park is beautiful. Children friendly. Huge Park. Water front accessible. Lively. However the toilets in the park lacks sanity. I been to quite a few parks this one is definitely among the bottom in the sanity list.

This County park is an absolute gem, I came here as a child and now bring my daughter which makes it even more special. The park is several miles long and runs along River Road in Piscataway beginning at East Jersey Olde Towne Village and ending near the Highland Park border. There are numerous activities: trails for running/walking/biking, fitness courses, athletic fields (soccer/baseball/cricket), playgrounds, outlooks along the Raritan River (overlooking New Brunswick), picnic groves, plenty of sunny and shady spots for play and relaxation, a small stand which sells light refreshments & the most popular spot (at least for us) - the little Animal Haven with an assortment of animals like goats, deer, pigs, horses and a few others. Years ago, they did keep a bear there too (Monty, I think his name was) but he’s moved on to a better place I imagine, and there is also a small horse track where I have seen people take out harnesses from time to time. The park is well kept and clean, and we find every visit to be enjoyable. It’s a very walkable, friendly park. If you prefer a more quiet experience, start at the East Jersey Olde Towne Village side which tends to be less crowded and has plentiful parking. The area by the animals (which is toward the center) can get very busy on the weekends, but it’s never unmanageable. Another bonus is this park is very conveniently located to Route 18/Route 287 etc. and is situated centrally so you can also access other area sites (such as Rutgers, Cornelius Lowe House or spots in New Brunswick). I would also highly recommend making time for East Jersey Olde Towne Village when you visit Johnson Park. Two cautions – (1) the park is located directly across from Rutgers football stadium so in the autumn when there are home football games, be prepared for a bit more traffic (particularly toward the “quiet” end of the park) and (2) one of the entrances to the park, the one off of Landing Lane that heads toward the East Jersey Old Town Village is only one-way so you may have to circle back on River Road if you mistakenly use this entrance thinking you can just turn around.
