a:shiwi a:wan museum and heritage center

This is an outstanding museum. The presentation is geared to the A:shiwi (Zuni) young people primarily. The information labels are all written out in the Zuni language as well as in English. It is not a "collections" museum, but a museum that artfully displays a selection of historic and artistic objects that portray something of the history and culture of the Zuni people. Definitely worth a visit.

I found the exhibits here offered a good introduction to the Zuni people and their culture. This is not a slick operation, by any means: it's clearly a series of exhibits put together on a very limited budget. Yet despite the limited resources they are done very well, and visitors come away with a much fuller appreciation of the Zuni people and culture. The museum staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and eager to answer questions - do poke your head into the office if you want to find out more!

The museum & heritage center was a good place to learn about the history & culture of the Zuni people. People from the community & the staff welcomed us to Zuni and told us about the area.

A fantastic museum to visit. Although the outside is nondescript, you must stop and see the mural painted by Zuni artists depicting their emergence legends of how they came to be. They have published a beautiful hardcover book published which describes the mural in full color. There are many other things as well,

If you go to the Zuni Pueblo, be sure to visit the museum. It will give you a better understanding of the culture. The mural as you enter is excellent if you have a museum person explain it. Good video. Be aware the hours may be somewhat flexible.

Be sure to check on the hours for this small, but touching museum. We loved to murals and the information on Zuni's past.

Time is elastic. The sign on the door said 'Back at 2' but the person in charge didn't reappear until sometime after 2.30. It was worth the return visit, to see this very interesting museum. It is really constructed for the locals and we tourists are privileged to also learn from it.

Wenn man als Tourist erstmals Zuñi Pueblo besucht, dann weiß man in der Regel nicht viel über die Bewohner und ihr Pueblo. Man hat nur gehört, dass viele Zunis außergewöhnliche Künstler sind. Um die Geschichte, Kultur, Religion, Sprache und das Kunsthandwerk näher kennenzulernen, empfiehlt sich zuerst der Besuch des A:shiwi A:wan Museum and Heritage Centers. Das Museum ist in der ehemaligen Kelsey Trading Post, dem „Hebadin'a Building“, untergebracht. Das Haus wurde um 1911 gebaut und bis 1981 als Handelsposten genutzt. Danach fungierte das Gebäude als Lager, bis es schließlich im Dezember 2002 als A:shiwi A:wan Museum eine neue Bestimmung bekam.Das Museum selbst wurde bereits 1992 gegründet und es wird von den Zuñi selbst geführt und verwaltet. Es ist klein und überschaubar, zeigt aber eine faszinierende Fülle an Ausstellungsgegenständen, Fotos, Bildern, Werkzeugen, Kult- und Kunstgegenständen. Besonders interessant sind die alten Fotos und Filme, aber auch die Originalaufnahmen von alten Geschichten und Legenden, erzählt von Stammesälteren in der Sprache der Zuñis. Eindrucksvoll sind auch die Wandmalereien, die Szenen aus der Entstehung und Besiedlung von Halona:wa zeigen. Diese alte und jetzt verlassene Siedlung lag in der Nähe des jetzigen Pueblos an beiden Seiten des Zuñi-Rivers.Besonderes Lob gebührt den Mitarbeitern, sie sind äußerst hilfsbereit, kompetent und uns neugierigen Touristen gegenüber sehr aufgeschlossen gewesen.Elahkwa!
