We have watched movies at the El Raton many times. Theater is old but charming. FOlks operating the theater are great and strive to support the local community. Popcorn is great so well worth the visit.

Prices are fair, and the staff is friendly and helpful.The 3D glasses lenses are often used and dirty, or even scratched. El Raton is one of the few 'atmospheric' theatres left. In stead of watching a movie in a modern 'box' theatre, watch here, and be amazed by the art deco architecture, the castle theme, and of course the Dolby Digital 3D picture and Dolby 7.1 surround sound! El Raton is a perfect blend of modern technology with classic styling. An actual experience of going to the movies!

Die Fassade dieses kleinen Theaters erinnert an eine wehrhafte mittelalterliche spanische Burg mit Türmchen, Zinnen und Erkern. Auch im Inneren setzt sich dieser Stil fort. Leider wurden die von bekannten Künstlern angefertigten Wand- und Deckenmalereien später übermalt. Der Bau des Theaters begann am 15. Juli 1928, eröffnet wurde es am 20. April 1929. Der Architekt stammte aus Albuquerque und die Baukosten sollen sich auf US-$ 100.000,-- belaufen haben. Im Auditorium und am Balkon konnten 520 Zuseher Platz nehmen. Im Jahr 2006 stellte das Theater den Spielbetrieb ein und im selben Jahr wurde es in das „New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties“ aufgenommen, 2007 in die Liste „National Register of Historic Properties“. Doch im April 2008 fanden sich engagierte Bürger, kauften das historische Gebäude und wandelten es in ein Kino um. Es werden laufend aktuelle Filme gezeigt. So konnte ein historisches Gebäude und Wahrzeichen von Raton vor dem Verfall gerettet und einer neuen Bestimmung übergeben werden.
