One of the mot scenic canyons and fisheries in the country. The public use portion of the Cimarron River Canyon runs for 8 miles from the Tolby campground on U.S. Hwy 64 East just below Eagle Nest, NM and terminates at the Village of Ute Park, NM own canyon. The 8 mile public portion is a NM State Park. Just below the Tolby campground you will find the "Special Trout Waters" that runs for the next mile and a half. Single barbless, no bait area and one fish only, 16" or better. You must have a daily $5 parking pass to park in the state park areas. An annual pass at $40 is available from the Park Rangers office. You can camp and RV. The Cimarron River is a tailwater off the Eagle Nest Dam. The fish include Browns, Rainbows, Cuttbows, Brookies. May through October produces some of the best dry fly fishing. The local fly shop and guide service Dos Amigos Anglers in Eagle Nest, NM can provide daily updates on water flows, fishing conditions and the best flies.

Have fished this river twice. The latest time 10 Aug 2014. It is a small river about ten to fifteen feet wide, one to three feet deep and heavily overgrown in most places. Also, full of dead timber. Very tough to fish. See where some have caught great fish, but wonder if they had a guide and fished private waters?

I visited Cimmaron and Eagle's Nest every singer growing up. It's so beautiful! The locals are nice. The town of Eagle's Nest has grown a little, but not enough to detract from the landscape. They have a wonderful Subway, great fishing, fun ships, and lots of local decor!!

Lovely spot to sit and relax! Watch the fish in the water. Fish if you like. Be sure to have a New Mexico Day Use Pass if you're in the state park area. (Big fine if you don't.)

I have fished several times with Doc Thompson and Spencer Seim. Not only are both individuals known world wide for their angling prowess, they are excellent individuals. Both have a tremendous amount of knowledge about the history of the area, and run a really professional outfitting service. If you want the true southwest fly fishing experience, don't waste your time fishing with anyone else. These guys are the best out there.

Great scenery and beautiful photo ops. Good place to fish and just hike some of the area trails as well. Clear river waters. Would recommend to elk and wildlife watchers as well.

May people come to the Cimarron River to enjoy fishing is its cool running waters. There seems to alway be someone walking along the road way with a few trout hanging from their stringer. This is a great place to stop for a picnic and make sure you watch for the wild life in the area. I have personaly seen large herds of elk and deer, wild turkey, bears, beaver, and a bob cat. I once saw a mountain lion just outside the town of Cimarron. Now don't think you can see all these animals all the time, this is not a zoo, but they are all animals native to this river valley. Enjoy them!
