ABQ has tons of open space, few are as little known as Gutierrez Canyon. It's actually in Cedar Crest, east of ABQ. Take Highway 14 to the Cedar Crest Post Office. Drive to the back of the post office's dirt parking lot just west of the post office. There you'll find a badly marked trailhead with a post and a trail. The hike itself is quite easy of a hike. I'd advise going during dry times and NOT in winter. There's one section that sees very little sunlight and becomes nearly impassable when snow, ice, or rain have softened the ground, and this section is near the beginning, ruining your trip. It's my understanding that the open space is now over 700 acres. But we've only hiked the Gutierrez Canyon portion. It's not terribly well marked and "canyon" is used lightly. It's not your typical breathtaking canyon. But it's a brilliantly untouched landscape. VERY few people hike here. The only thing I fear is now that this review exists, others will enjoy my secluded open space.
