red gulch dinosaur tracksite

We visited this site in june 2014 and found it simply the best, as it was easy to get to, well signposted and very well managed ! The location is just superb and very evocative . While there are other good track sites around, none for us has the same appeal as Red Gulch. (In Colorado one is a bit lost in a residential area, while in Utah they can be very difficult to locate or to get to, while others in Utah are well preserved but are covered for protection, which takes away a bit of the magic)

Hard to see the tracks, but once we saw the first few tracks, it became easier. Really neat to walk the oath of a dinosaur! Heads up....this is not a paved road, but we didn't have a problem. Not sure I would brave it in the rain though. On the road to the site, keep eye out for wildlife...we saw several pronghorn. At the site, there is some confusing signage...couple of signs posted about not taking fossils, but then one sign says you can take invertebrates. We skipped taking them, but wish signs were clear.

very neat site, we were there in July and the snakes were there in number after a rain storm, look before hands and feet are moved.Site is very interesting if you like fossils and such, those with us who are not into that stuff were very bored and scared of the snakes. remote and potentially dangerous site, not only from the snakes, use your head trust your gut.

I admit the first time I went I didn't see the tracks. However after a rain the tracks were very visible and i was like a kid in a candy store. Its very fun and cheap as its free!

It's really easy to find the tracks here and when you do find them there are a lot. Basically if you're looking to see dino tracks outside of a museum this is a great place. Also most (maybe all) of the tracks are three toed carnivores so it will probably appeal to those with vivid imaginations. Finally I expect you will have the place all to yourself which is not to be underappreciated.The site is accessible to just about any kind of normal car.So why only 4 stars? It's a 90 minute visit at most unless you want to picnic or something (no shade).

This was so cool - we were so glad we stopped. Head out on Red Gulch/ Alkali Backcountry Highway for 5 miles. It is gravel but was an easy drive and was maintained up to the Track site. (Signs do warn you though, if you plan on traveling past the tracksite that you will need a high clearance vehicle). The scenery on the way to the tracksite is amazing - just beautiful. We were surprised when we got there - nice walk-ways, many interpretive signs and well maintained. You can go right down and see the tracks & stepped where they stepped. It is fun trying to find them all, and the kids loved this. It does get quite hot (98 degrees late afternoon when we were there) and wished we would have done this in the morning or evening when it was cooler.

If you go when it is hot out, take LOTS of water! You will need it. Our 7 y/o loved identifying the tracks and "walking in their steps". I was surprised that the site is open for you to walk right down and literally step in the footprints. We loved it, but it was probably too hot of a day and we should have planned better!

If you are interested in the ancient past, or dinosaurs, or science, or all of the above, the Red Gulch Dinosaur tracksite is a neat visit.It is cool to be able to put your hand in a dinosaur footprint.If you look at the dirt walls above the tracksite you can spot and collect ancient seashell fossils.I had a lot of fun collecting several seashell fossils.There is a place for picnicking if you wish, as well as bathrooms. The landscape around the tracksite is neat, too.
