If you want to see huge dirt moving equipment this is an awesome experience. The coal mines around Gillette have huge haul trucks etc

This mine is very large and you can take a tour of the site if you stop by the Gillette tourist ofice located on highway 59. There are silos, haul trucks, trains, and lots of dirt and coal to see.

Take the tour it is free and well worth it. Our guide was full of information and seeing how this mine works is fantastic. We got up close to the big equipment and felt how small we really are. No wonder they drive on opposite sides and safety is such a big issue. The equipment could squish a normal truck or even bus without even knowing it. Watching the train load and the details provided on that portion of the operation is something very few know unless they take the tour. I would love to have a longer tour and even more information. Well worth your time.

Enjoyed our tour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. I learned so much about the coal industry and energy. This would be a fun trip for all ages. I wish that we would have been able to get out of the bus to stand next to the big machinery but understand the reason we had to remain in the vehicle. Planning on bringing my elderly Father next spring.

Make a resi. 9 or 11am. You re taken by small tour bus to the overlook and into the the conveyor and shipping process. Awesome operation to see a 140 car train load under a silo that is constantly being fed by convneyors and gigund dump trucks. Knowledgeable tour guide- a woman and former coal truck driver-knows it all. Very welcoming staff and best of all it s FREE! Don t miss this . takes two fun hours.

Unfortunately, we were in Gillette on a weekend so we couldn't get a tour. We drove to the overlook where we could look down into the mining operation. Even though it was Sunday, there was mining going on. At least six dump trucks were running back and forth emptying overburden. The way they cut one side and fill the other, the hole actually moves as they follow the coal vein. A huge 13' tire and scoop bucket are on display.

Great free tour...very educational and interesting. Had a wonderful guide. 2 hours and worth every minute of it. Comfy AC bus to take us there.

Definitely call the Visitor Center and make a reservation. The tour guide we had was a teacher in the local Jr High and she was an awesome tour guide. She actually worked at that mine for a while and was able to give us some first-hand info. Great way to learn a bit about the Energy Capital, Gillette.

Need a leg stretch on the long, flat interstate across Wyoming? For a picnic spot with a difference try the viewing area overlooking the open-cast coal mine outside Gillette. Follow the signs for the airport and it’s just beyond that, you can’t miss it.

The local chamber and information bureau sponsor a visit to an open pit coal mine. The transportation was first class. and our guide was very informed about the working of the mine and equiptment.

Just north of Gillette the public viewing area overlooks a massive surface coal mine - all the mining machinery look like miniature toys in this "big hole".In the viewing area there is a dumper tyre and a digger bucket which makes you realise how big the machinery really is.The mine itself offers free tours which must be booked in Gillette.40% of the coal mined in the USA comes from this area!
