I suppose it is neat to have so many elkhorns collected in one place, but years ago they painted them brown and they lost any authentic appeal.

If you're driving through Afton, Wyoming in the beautiful Star Valley, you will unavoidably drive under what Afton proudly proclaims to be the world's largest elkhorn arch. And who is to doubt a claim like that? I mean, really, how many elkhorn arches are there in the world? I have seen a number of them, interestingly, all in either Star Valley or Jackson Hole, Wyoming and I'm convinced the claim to be the world's largest is not without merit. You really can't appreciate what an elkhorn arch is until you've seen one. This one, even to a casual observer, is impressive. I can't really estimate the size of the thing but it arches the entire four lane road running through the center of town. The arch is fashioned from thousands of antlers shed by elk in the surrounding area. It had been several years since I last made a trip through the area and during that interval the city has added a pair of life size elk, in battle royal, atop the arch. In case you casually drive through and are confused about what you're seeing, there is a sign prominently hung beneath the arch explaining exactly what you're looking at. The world's largest elkhorn arch is ketchy, kind of funny and rather quaint. Every town needs something to be proud of, and what better display of civic pride than an elkhorn arch across main street in the center of town? The arch is worth stopping to see and a definite photo opportunity. Just imagine the "selfie" possibilities
