union station transportation museum

Great place to take a break and tour. Maybe 30 minutes to go through the museum but a good opportunity to stretch your legs if you are traveling along Hwy. 77 or Hwy. 290 through Giddings.

This museum, located in the restored freight depot building, takes you back to the glory days of passenger rail travel. Exhibits explain the history of the Houston and Central Texas Railway and varied displays include information about trains, depots, and the agents who managed the depots. I enjoyed the exhibit about the famous railroad watches. Also located in the depot is an interesting exhibit on Texas lawmen and outlaws, including local desperado, William "Wild Bill" Longley. Located in the front of the depot are a number of racks containing touring information for many other locations in Texas. The Chamber of Commerce office and the Rural Texas Tourism office is located in the restored Passenger depot next door. This is the first place to go when visiting Giddings.
