This is no where near Crockett tx even though it shows up on the things to do there. It is actually located in west Texas near I10 but looks cool.

Forts interest me as I am an Army Brat. A buddy and I were on a motorcycle trip and this road looked interesting, which it was. We ran across this fort by accident so we took a look. We were a little disappointed that it was not ran by the Parks and Wildlife as we had passes for them. The Historical Society runs it. The displays were informative since there is not much left of the fort. It is very interesting to read about these old forts and the hardships the soldiers went through. I would not say this would be a destination by itself but being not far from I-10 and a scenic drive to there it is worth the stop especially if you like history and out of the way places.

Ft.Lancaster is really not that far off the beaten path, but it seems like it when you are standing there on the parade grounds. It's just a side loop of IH-10, and well worth the short drive. We were coming east on IH-10 when we saw the sign, 13 miles to Ft. Lancaster, and we thought, ok, let's go see it. Sometimes we have seen the most amazing things by choosing things at the last minute. Well, not much of the original fort in standing, but the little museum inside is full of wonderful details and information. Do stop there, and bring the kids, there activities for the young ones to do, such a try on a soldier's uniform, or a laundress apron, and it's a great place for kids to stretch their legs. Fort Lancaster remains the only Texas fort that was attacked by Native Americans. Fort Lancaster is the only fort owned and operated by the State of Texas that once hosted military camels. Today, visitors can see how these military camels were used during Fort Lancaster’s living history events.

This was an interesting post, where no one else seemed to go. I was the first visitor they had in 2 days. It is only 10 miles or so off I 10, anyone interested in frontier forts should at least stop in. There was not much to see here, all off the buildings were rubble, and signs pointed out what the buildings used to be. The museum was decent with the history of the post and the era military artifacts. I didn't feel like I wasted my time not seeing any 19th century buildings, but at least paid my respects to the soldiers who was stationed at one time in the middle of the desert.
