I heard rumors that hotels want this space, but visit and enjoy. We expected a few galleries, but there are three stories of a variety of art work. We spent at least two hours going through and didn't see everything. Hint - it opens at 10 am but many artists aren't open until 11 am, and may be closed. Great art in a great setting. I hope it continues on.

The best part of this place is the history--which unfortunately takes a backseat to the art galleries here. I like the archaeology museum upstairs, but again, sort of takes a backseat. It's an old WWI (yes, 1) torpedo factory that used to employ most of the citizens of Alexandria. Later, it was used to house important, secure documents--including those regarding the Nuremberg trials! I'm glad the galleries have saved it from demolition!

In what was a WW2 torpedo factory now stands a building swarming with a multitude of artists of every type, from painters, glassblowers, sculptors to woodworkers. A lot of the pices are for sale from $1 to thousands.

The art here is worth a trip to Alexandria. The town itself is not much different than many others in the area, with a vibrant downtown of trendy expensive shops, lots of cafes and restaurants. If this is your thing, you will love it.But if you are seeking the weird, wonderful, beautiful and unique, skip the shops in the central part of Old Town and head straight to the Torpedo Factory. You can get there directly from the Metro by getting on the free bus that serves the downtown area. The Torpedo Factory is located near the end of the ride, or you can do as we did and get off in the central part of Old Town and walk the remainder of the street to reach the Torpedo Factory.Other reviewers have mentioned the cost of the art - which we found entirely reasonable. Art requires not only the actual time to construct, paint or fabricate, but time to imagine, attempt, refashion...and fail. Often a piece that requires many hours just doesn’t work and must be abandoned or completely remade. Most artists never recoup the hours that go into a piece, and most don’t care. Artists do what they do because they have art inside them and its got to come out - not for the money because the money is never enough to cover the time that goes into the creation. No matter what type of art you love, you will find it here. Paintings, drawings, fabric, sculpture, mixed media - all represented, and represented well. High standards are present at each and every studio. Regardless of your preferences, it is heartening to see a valuable and successful art community. The local artists have also created a teaching culture through a variety of classes for all ages in this building.Check out Keen Things on the first floor - absolutely wonderful stuff created in the imagination of Lisa Schumaier. We loved the cats, mice, and miscellaneous creatures that she fashions from a variety of materials. We also loved Studio 320, the three D dolls? creatures? Whatever you call them they express joy, humor and light. These are people who see the world as a weird, beautiful, and wonderful place and they help us see it that way too. Great art is like that - it is a window into alternative ways of looking at the world. It inspires us to see things differently. More importantly it helps us to realize that we can see the world through another's perspective - often very different from our own. Wander through the Torpedo Factory and see for yourself.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this place. There are lots of different types of art. It was exciting to see people creating and talking about their art. The factory has 3 floors with lots of rooms on each floors. I will definitely go back if I am in the area.

Interesting place to visit on a rainy or cold day. A whole range of artists have studios with a whole range of skills, in my opinion. Some of the artists play to the audience, with work that may be closer to "craft" than 'art' Others seem to be there since they can afford the studio rather than deserve the studio.

It was fun. So much to see. Nothing to dislike. We went there because our granddaughter's art class had an exhibit there.

It is a fun place to wander around and visit different artists' studios and shops. The artists are very friendly and answered all the questions I had about some of their work.

The renowned art on display and up for sale is fantastic, however a bit over priced. As an artist I really enjoy seeing what others create and this is certainly the place to explore an eclectic selection of artwork. Old Town Alexandria has a flair for attracting musicians, artists, antique dealers and global wares in chic boutiques from all walk of life. Having been a resident of the area since I was born, I have seen lots of changes to the waterfront area of Washington, DC, VA and MD. I am all for having modern amenities but the torpedo factory should have kept more of his historical charm. The modernized shops just don't carry the history of the building. To me, this is disappointing but then again, I have a soft spot for historical buildings, churches and homes. If you have the chance, go enjoy the Torpedo Factory. You'll be glad you did.

The old torpedo factory has been converted into an art centre. Wander through and watch artists at work, and buy some of the lovely things they've created. If you're after paintings or hand crafts, you'll be spoilt for choice.

Torpedo Factory is not worth the trip. It has deteriorated wretchedly. The building probably needs a safety inspection.

Working artists display and selling their work. Check out the art league gallery for some deals on emerging artist works.

The venue itself is super interesting, then add in that local artists work and sell their product here, and you've got a few hours of entertainment. The location, right in the heart of Old Town Alexandria on the waterfront, is convenient and adds to the fun of visiting this place.

It's exactly what it sounds like. And if you love art, and particularly framing artwork like my eclectic wife, you'll love this place. But bring your checkbook. And your life savings. Because this stuff is really expensive! But its still nice to visit!
