The Gilson is a lot of fun on one level. It's comfortable and a nice way to see a movie. They now are offering first-run films, which is nice. But the food is terrible and the menu probably has not been updated in 25 years. What restaurant serves cheap potato chips anymore? With a little more effort and investment, the Gilson could be top notch. The little Mexican restaurant next door to the Gilson is really good and owned by the Gilson's owner. My advice-get to Winsted early, eat at Padres, then go to the Gilson. If you still have hunger pangs, order their popcorn, which is the real thing.

A very unique cinema and cafe where you can drink and dine while watching a great movie. We saw the Imitation Game in the upstairs theater, which is the smaller of the two. Tickets were $8.50 each. Wait staff were attentive but the food was average at best. My wife's turkey wrap was fine. My chicken teriyaki special was overcooked but edible. Came with a small fresh greens salad which was fine but the bread was not. Far from the upscale menu mentioned in a previous Hartford Courant review! I probably should have ordered a bowl of chili which seems to be the way to go based on other reviews. The draft beer was good and cold and our seats were very comfortable. Overall, a good experience. Would be a 5 star venue with better food!!

What a GREAT place! The Gilson plays first run movies in a beautiful old theatre setting on Main Street in the quaint New England Connecticut Town of Winsted! Good basic foods and drink are available and served before and during the show in a comfortable environment by a friendly and attentive Wait Staff! Two movies shown in a large downstairs and a smaller theatre upstairs! By the way... the prices are very comfortable too! Enjoy watching a show in this fun and different way!

We always have a great time at the Gilson. It is a great adult night out since you can only have kids there on certain nights. The seats are comfy and the food is simple but tasty. Prices are very reasonable.

The Gilson is a gem for this town! Alan Nero, the owner, takes great pride in this place. It now runs first issued movies. There is comfortable seating, good food and drink. Living here in town we often check it see what is playing and head on down for dinner and a movie. If we ever leave this area we will greatly miss this place.

We've enjoyed drinks, dinner and a movie at the Gilson many times since moving to CT - always a great time. They have a full bar, including draft beer, a simple menu (mostly sandwiches), the food is good, prices are quite reasonable. They show first run art cinema movies that are hard to find sometimes at other theaters. For about what you would spend at a regular theater for the movie, popcorn and soda, you can enjoy a movie, a good sandwich and a drink at the Gilson. There are 2 theaters showing 2 different movies. One larger theater downstairs and one smaller theater upstairs. You need reservations for Friday and Saturday nights definitely, so call ahead or reserve tickets on their web site if you are going on Friday or Saturday. Enjoy!.

The Gilson is a very unique movie theatre. Customers sit at tables, order food and watch the film while dining (a "dinner-movie") Unfortunately, the food is pretty mediocre, but the experience is special.

I love going here be use it's the only place I know where you can watch a film and dine at the same time. When you are used to being crammed into a row of seats at the cinema it's great to have room to move about and sit at a table with a drink and a meal. The food is simple but good, the chilli is fantastic! The whole thing makes going to the cinema an entirely new and fun experience, you should definitely do this at least once in your life.

The Gilson is the perfect place for a date night. Dinner and a movie combined. The food is nothing special - I would say it is like going to a diner that has a very limited menu. But they serve booze and you get to watch a movie...so what's better than that?!We went last week and we split the veggie and cheese plate to start which was a pretty generous serving - too much for one person but plenty for two. My wife had a turkey and ham club sandwich and I had the chef salad. Again, the food is nothing great, but the prices are reasonable and the drinks are good. Our theater was packed on a Sunday night so be sure to get there in plenty of time. Fun night and a fun place.

The price of the movies are very reasonable, waitstaff is very pleasant. Service is good. Food is average, very simple fare but with a full bar. Nice to sit down and have food and a drink while you watch a movie! I thought it was an enjoyable "date night" . My husband and I could enjoy food, drinks and a movie in an intimate atmosphere while getting back home in time for the sitter. Will be back for sure, good experience.

I do have a great time doing dinner and a movie together. The concept is great, but the food could be a tad better for the price.

Reasonably priced, efficient and unobtrusive wait staff, better than take out food, but most of all, such a fun thing to watch a movie (not second run) while you eat. Desert and alcohol also available. They do have an age policy for youth to be observed. Open every evening except Mondays.
