After touring nearby Rosewood Plantation and dining at Old Country Store in Lorman we ventured on to the Windsor ruins. I felt as though we had been transported back to the antebellum South. You could see, hear, feel, and imagine life on what is left of this massive plantation. The remoteness of the site added to the aura.

Certainly is a little out of the way, but it is totally worth the extra miles. A very easy drive down through some interesting little town. Definitely a sight to see.

this ruin is out of the way, I came down from port Gibson on winding back road, very peaceful, except for the fact I wasn't totally sure I was on the right road. I had seen the pix while researching the area, and decided I wanted to see it. glad I did, it is very impressive. as mentioned nothing on the site except for the columns. it would be quicker to get to from the natchez trace exit that is south of it, but if you are like me and enjoy wondering, try from port Gibson[you may want to ask, as it's a bit tricky.]

This is in the middle of nowhere and hard to find but it's really impressive once you find it, if you're fond of ruins. Looks like a Greek Temple used to stand there.

Do be aware that it is quite a drive from the highway, although the drive has some interest of its own. The ruins are important to anyone studying Grant's movements toward the Vicksburg siege.

Awesome! The story of Windsor is so sad, but the site is beautiful. I had always wanted to see these ruins since I was a kid, and finally got to swing by and take a look. Well worth the extra side trip down the country road to find it. And be sure to go beyond to the Bethel Presbyterian Church.

This ruins is over 10 miles off the beaten path, but well worth the drive. Closes at dusk. Standing and looking at the Windsor Ruins, you can just imagine how majestic the home was before it burned down. There is a little plaque explaining the history of the home. We got some nice pictures.

This site is a must see. It defies good description. Historically, it has great significance to The Civil War. Before it was burned down, the Union Army camped on the property on their way to battle in Port Gibson. Also was featured in the movie Raintree County, and the beautiful stairs were relocated to nearby Alcorn State University.

My second day on the road started with a detour off the Trace to the Windsor Ruins. In the late 1800s, slaves made thousands of bricks in a kiln on the property to construct twenty-nine 45-foot-high pillars. Ironwork came from St. Louis. Skilled carpenters were hired from New England. The resulting three-story home was extraordinary, even by plantation standards. In 1895, a fire started while the family was away and burned the place to the ground. But the columns and ironwork did not burn. And they stand to this day in the middle of the jungle-like overgrowth that has consumed the abandoned plantation. I literally gasped when the soot-covered columns suddenly appeared a hundred yards off the road. Then I enjoyed a solitary walk through the ruins. It was a memorable visit. To see the Windsor Ruins yourself—as well as scenes from the Isabella Bed & Breakfast and Natchez Trace landmarks—check out my video, “Adventure #8: Mississippi Bicycling The Natchez Trace Parkway.” Simply search “Jim Busek” on Google and all the videos will be right here. I think you will like this one, in particular.

Well worth the trip although it was a little bit out of the way. Beautiful architecture back then ...Greek Revival

I was in Mississippi to visit the Vicksburg National Military Park. I had read about this attraction and decided to visit it before heading back to Jackson to the airport. It was a Sunday morning and was very peaceful. I walked the grounds for maybe 25 minutes. There honestly isn't much to see and do here, but it is still a place where one can be awestruck. The columns remain standing as a testament to what had long still past. In some ways, this reminds me of a graveyard. All-in-all, I am glad I went. Afterwards I took the Natchez Trace back to Jackson.

After lunch at the Old Country Store, our motorcycle group decided to take a side trip down to the Windsor Ruins. It was fun walking around the ruins and discussing what we all thought the old house might have looked like.

Windsor Ruins is such a lovely piece of history. The detail on the remaining columns help you imagine what the 23 bedroom house must have been like. There is just a simple reading on the Ruins so you probably won't spend a whole lot of time here. If you're traveling on the trace, take the time to ride over.

A very unique place to visit. Wish I could have seen it in its glory days. Unfortunately, it is way back in the middle of nowhere.

Good way to step back in time. Sad story of what happened to such a beautiful house. A must for those who like history and what happened.
