At this point the lighthouse reconstruction at its new, non-coastal location is still underway. It is a beautiful story you can read if you dodge traffic to the little space of land the lighthouse is being rebuilt on by the bridge toward Biloxi. It would be great if they add more information before it is done.

Touring lighthouses is my vacation objective. I went to climb the Biloxi lighthouse and found out the Round Island lighthouse had been save or at least part of it and a reconstruction project was going on to honor it in the town of Pascagoula. I drove over the long bridge and behold it was there just alongside the highway. I was so happy to see that a community was trying to save an historical landmark, and it was especially amazing to see how many companies and school children were participating too. Thanks to the town and all others for saving this historical lighthouse.

The Round Island Lighthouse originally stood on Round Island Mississippi until it was toppled by Hurricane George in 1998. It was then saved from total destruction and moved to the City of Pascagoula and rebuilt just off US Hwy 90. While it is still a work in progress(as moneys are made available) the fact that it was saved as a part of US Maritime history is a truly great achievement. It is certainly worth taking a few minutes out of your time to view, photograph and learn some history and leave the fast paced world of today for a few minutes by taking a back road away from the interstate and learning about the history of America and therefore helping to preserve this type of history and historic buildings. The lighthouse does not at present offer either tours or convenient parking but if you park on a nearby street or parking area and take a short walk you can see the restored and well maintained structure and small park. Take time out of your busy world and enjoy and by doing so help keep interest growing in our history!
