Many of my friends have no idea of who General Pershing was, and so did not understand I was excited when I learned we would be driving by his birthplace. (He among, other things, led the American Expeditionary force in WWI and greatly influenced later generals, such as George Marshall, George Patton)They would benefit from the somewhat lengthy film shown at the museum. We saw the film and looked at the small displays in the visitor center then went next door and enjoyed the exhibits in the old school house that had been moved to the site. Gen. Pershing taught for a brief period in this schoolhouse. There are several articles of his for viewing and also information on WWI. There is an interesting display of WWI posters as well.We also viewed his statue and the Wall of Honor for some of those who have served during wartime. We saw the outside of the home but did not tour the inside as we needed to leave. The house tour has a small fee.We were all alone on the tour and the director spent over an hour with us answering many questions and giving lots of information. Enjoyed our time in this well maintained setting.

This is a beautiful, well-maintained site. For a small fee, you can tour the house, we skipped this but may go back. It meant alot for my husband to see this site because he served in the Army in the Pershing Missile dept. back in the 80's. Very touching moment to read all the names on the memorial.

This is a remarkable Missouri State Park that commemorates the life of General John J. Pershing. The museum and the boyhood home is just a most pleasant place to spend time and relish in the accomplishments of this American hero and historic figure. The layout and access to the site is really so very nicely done. Just a first rate place to visit.

We were passing through, and kept seeing the signs advertising the boyhood home of John J Pershing. So, we stopped, unfortunately the site was closed for the weekend. I am glad that we did stop, It was still worth the stop. There are several plaques with information about the site and Pershing. I advise anyone to stop here to see the site whether it is open or not...Great History! Usually, I like to prepare (by researching) before I visit a site. But since this was a spur-of-the-moment stop, I had to do the research later. Here is the website to prepare before visiting (or after): http://mostateparks.com/park/gen-john-j-pershing-boyhood-home-state-historic-site.

Had a great tour of General Pershing boyhood home - enjoyed the wealth of info the tour guide had regarding the Pershing family. Looked at the school building site that was moved to be near their home. The property is handled by the State Parks Dept and very well maintained.

As a history fan, I sought out this site on a recent Missouri road trip taking in some of my home state's history. This site includes Pershing's boyhood home, the school where he taught before his life in the military started and a memorial area including a great statue of the general. The tour of the home was very informative and inside the visitor's center area they have a great video (although it is a bit lengthy). Inside the schoolhouse (which has been moved to the site from its original location about 10 or so miles south of Pershing's home) are many great exhibits including many very neat artifacts from Pershing's life. The man working the day I went was very helpful, nice, informative and did a great job giving me a tour of the grounds. This site of a great Missourian and the inventor of 'jumping jacks' is definitely worth a visit :)

I saw the sign as I was turning onto 36 Hiway. Almost blew it off, but am glad I turned around. Very nice and well cared for historic site. The young man inside the office was friendly and very informative. I learned some things about Gen. Pershing that I did not know. He was was with Teddy Roosevelt. Later a Lt. named Patton was under his command. The museum is free. There is a fee for touring the house and it takes about 45 minutes. A place to go if you are a history/military buff.

If you want to tour this, don't come on Sunday. The grounds are small, but very well kept. Nice statue with a memorial honoring veterans as well.

Well laid out site with a great deal of information about our country's highest ranking general (although recently demoted since it was determined that no one could be as highly ranked as George Washington). Guided tours are available, along with old film footage. Another great homeschool opportunity.

Not far off I36 in middle Missouri there is a small state park in memorial to the man who led American troops during Mexican war and WWI and changed the course of WWI. They are developing this site and striving to grow this memorial to Gen Pershing and the soldiers who served under him in both the Mexican war and WWI. If you are traveling down I36 it is worth a pause in your journey.http://mostateparks.com/park/gen-john-j-pershing-boyhood-home-state-historic-site
