I share the last name of the president. And I thought it would be nice to visit this memorial site. It is a lovely little park and the view on the sunny day was great. The pyramid monument is unique. My wife and I enjoyed the little visit. It was less than 30 minutes to leave the highway and check it out. The two-lane state route to get there is a hilly, winding road. There are some great vistas, but its a road you need to focus on while driving.

This park commerates the birthplace of President James Buchanan. It is a very small park. A road goes down the middle of it and is not much more than a mile long. There are quite few picnic tables and a couple of shelters. In the middle of the park is the monument dedicated to James Buchanan which sets on the site of his birthplace. There are plenty of signs telling about Buchanan which are very informative. The monument was in the shape of a pyramid, made of stone. Nothing was said why the pyramid shape but we assumed it was because he was a Mason. The park looked like it could use some upgrades to their picnic areas. Also if hiking trails could be developed it would add much to the park.

Buchanan's birthplace is located in a sylvan setting, and was apparently the first official state park. The monument is interesting, and reminded me of a Mason's symbol. I would not have been at all surprised to see the number "33" chiseled in the top stone. The historical markers are quite informative. The picnic areas looked serene and inviting.

This is a really nice park. Quiet and plenty of places to picnic. not sure if this park is used very much as it was empty when we went. Pleanty of shade and a really nice stream running through the place. Was a little disappointed that Buchanan's home is not really there. Just a monument.

This is an interesting PA State Park about a misunderstood President. Some call James Buchanan one of the worst presidents but this park and the presentation of its history and Pres. Buchanan presents a much different story. You really have to want to go there but we found it well worth the trip. It is actually only a few miles from US 30, The Lincoln Highway. The monument built by the president's niece is a 31' tall pyramid with a 38' square base well off the beaten trail in a beautiful area in the woods of southern PA. The pyramid is in the location of Buchanan's log cabin birthplace. The log cabin has been moved several times and is now on the campus of Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg just a few miles from the State Park. It is also worth the trip to see.
