This is a lovely, scenic byway full of history and beautiful driving. You may want to check the weather when traveling this road as it is a 2 lane road...some passages which (at mountain tops)can be treacherous during the winter with snow and ice. From fall with trees with colored leaves through summer and spring with the greenery...this road is not to be missed.

If you have the time to travel the Lincoln highway, in Bedford and beyond, it will be well worth your time. I have done it across the entire state of Pennsylvania and it was great fun. Get maps that point out the special attractions and see them all. That is what my sister and I did. Even if just doing Bedford County though, you will enjoy it.

My husband and I were taking a weekend trip to enjoy foliage and to check out the Fulton County Grease , Steam and Rust show in McConnelsburg Pa along with the parade in town. I had booked a hotel in Bedford and had no idea how far away it was. I was only thinking in the lines of historic attractions. So of course I figured Route 30 to be a gorgeous mountain trek by car. As we followed the route it became scarily steep rural climbs and horrendous down grades. Good thing my husband decided to take his Silverado Pickup Truck. My Honda Mini Van would have had a tough time. We are talking about extremely steep and hairpin turns over looking the Allegheny Mountains full of color. Word of advise.......take the Pike!!! The scenery is still beautiful, and the roads are easier.

If you have a little extra time, avoid the PA Turnpike and drive Route 30, the Old Lincoln Highway. Very little traffic on it (but if you're going to Pittsburgh, avoid the Route 30 stretch between Irwin and Pittsburgh) and was very well maintained during a recent heavy snow.

We turned off the freeway at Jenners to go to the Flight 93 National Memorial and found we were on the Lincoln Highway. The drive was through rural Pennsylvania. We spent some time at the memorial and then continued on the Lincoln Highway to Bedford. The segment of the Lincoln from the memorial to Bedford had the most developed Autumn colors of our entire trip which was from southern Virginia all the way to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. We were on the return home when we traveled the Lincoln Highway October 2. The next day we continued on the Lincoln Highway to Breezewood where we took I-70. The whole drive was beautiful and full of interesting sights. The Lincoln Highway was welcome relief from following cars and truck down the freeways and toll roads. I have added some photos with the review which were all taken from the car as we drove, except the photos at the historic gas station in Bedford.

Route 30....from Philly to Pittsburgh and beyond. A hard drive with hair pin turns and quick ascents and descents to 3000 ft heights...great for 5 on the floor. Yes there are covered bridges off to the back roads and murals on barns and sculptors and lots of road signs about local history. Traffic can be heavy at times but then other times you are the only car on the road . Take advantage of period inns and pubs on your way...even a fort or two and the 9/11 monument. Enjoy the scenery.

While traveling through the Bedford we were truly impressed by the history of the area. There seems to be lots to do and plenty of activities

A group of us rode a small portion of this road and thoroughly enjoyed it. History abounds in the buildings and scenery as we rode. Do check out the covered bridges in the area around Bedford too.

Took it from Bedford to Somerset after visiting the fish hatchery. A lot of nice buildings and some elevation points along the way. The most above sea level I have been is 2430 but thanks to taking this highway, I've been up almost 2500 feet above sea level!

We have traveled Rt 30 since we both where born. We live just 15 min. from it near Monroeville Pa. Once you get out of the Pittsburgh Subs. there is a lot of history. Bedford, Everett, Chambersburg, Gettysburg and many other small towns. This is the route the great G.Washington took to Fort Pitt now Pittsburgh during the 1700's. If you want to do something for yourself/kids take the highway from Summerset east. It will take more time but it will be worth it. I just don't understand why it is not called the Washington Highway. To my knowledge Lincoln really never traveled on it much if at all.

Was not opened but pretty neat to see. Quite historic as well. It was relocated to the county fairgrounds

Nice drive. We drove to the 9/11 memorial for Flight 93 and took this highway. It was a lovely drive on the return trip to the Omni Bedford Springs hotel.

I only wish there was more open on Sundays. This is a great route to just take off on and grab a dinner along the way or hit some shops or just enjoy the view.

I've driven all of PA's lincoln Highway form Philadelphia to Pittsburgh and i especially love the Heritage Corridor from Ligonier to Abbottstown. Yes it is longer and it is mostly two lane driving, but how nice to be able to take tthe time and enjoy the scenery and look to find some of the old unrestored locations along the Old Lincoln Highway. Enjoy the art from the murals on the the sides of building, arti decorated gas pumps to the Roadsid Giants created by high school students to memorialize the Lincoln Highway. It is definitely a trip back in time and for once not a highway littered with adult bookstores and fast food stops every five miles. For spedd and car jockeying take the turn pike, but you will miss Mr. Ed's Emporium and Elephant Museum, quaint towns and beautifully restored and maintained buildings.l,

Where else can you see the worlds largest coffee pot, the worlds largest quarter and a heard of bison within 1/2 hour of each other? Fun trip.
