I was very excited about the new Milwaukee Trail coming to Bedford. I know that new endevours take time to perfect, so I am patiently waiting in hopes that the trail will be resurfaced with something more permanent than pressed rock. It is a pretty walk and nice to not have to worry about all the cracked and uneven sidewalks as you walk. Be aware that there are no lights, waste containers (so take your trash back out with you) or any Police patrolling the trail.

While a rail to trail is a pretty straight shot with a slight grade, having the trail is a definite attraction to Bedford. The crews working on the conversion have sweated over the opening. I think there will be lots of projects for eagle scouts to put in benches, stations for dog waste bags, maybe even some exercise stations along the way, but for now it is a good place for a walk or bike (make sure your bike can handle gravel)

This new trail began as the Milwaukee Railroad. Since 2006, when it was no longer in use, it sat as a neglected, overgrown path coursing through the bottom of a steep ravine and working it's way to the countryside. Through a city Stellar grant, it has came back to life as a walking/biking trail. Fine gravel and new bridges have been put in place and now it's a beautiful outdoor experience! Brand new and still improving, the only current access point/parking is off John Williams Blvd/U St near the Samco building. With plans to further develop the town portion eastward, the path now goes west at least 5 finished miles. It snakes in and out of Salt Creek through shady woods and exposed limestone. Activity is picking up and there are bikers, joggers,& family walkers all out enjoying the new trail. it's very flat and easy to navigate. Also, there are enough people on it, that I've always felt safe.
