Heston Steam museum has them and they are unforgettable. You'll ride in an open air car through a picture perfect forest. The fares are reasonable and parking is free.

If you like trains this is a really fun afternoon. No a museum experience. But fun train rides. Something for adults and kids.

If you love steam engines, you need to visit Hesston! Staffed by volunteers who are there for the love of steam powered locomotion, you can ride the rails on large trains or miniatures. The tracks take a scenic tour of the northern Indiana woodlands. The park is free, and ride tickets are inexpensive. Make sure you stop by the old fashioned soda shop while you are there!

Hesston does not cost much money. They have 4 different train rides. Halloween & Christmas are the best. Love the shop they just built, turned out very nice. Our kids enjoyed old-fashion icecream. Nice relaxing time for the family!

If you love trains and antique tractors this is the place to visit. They have three operating railroads, featuring equipment from the Brookfield Zoo and the Kiddieland Amusement Park. The best time to go is Labor Day Weekend, when everything runs! This is a must see!

Great place to ride many old vintage trains of different sizes - small, medium and large to miniature. Steam or diesel. Rides on the big train are a little under 10 minutes. I didn't time the smaller trains. For safety reasons, Photography & Video are not allowed on the miniature trains. $17.00 for an adult ride ticket good for 4 rides on any train you want to ride on.I went Labor Day Weekend (Sunday) which coincides with their Steam & Power Show. A $5.00 admission is charged only during this weekend. There are old cars, trcuks and tractors on display throughout the 3 day weekend. THere is a hay bayler there and other heavy equipment that demonstrates what it does..There are vendors set up selling old toys, trains, antiques and rusty Gold (Junk). There is a small ice cream parlor on the premises. During this weekend there were a few food vendor wagons set up. At 3pm there was a Tractor Parade, some of which dated back to the 20's and 30's.The museum runs trains that once operated at Brookfield Zoo (IL) and Kiddieland Amusement Park (Melrose PArk, IL ). All the people working here are volunteers. Plenty of parking in a grass field.Great place to take the kids and grandkids........or your dog..

The Hesston Steam Museum was a wonderful find. We spent one afternoon over the 4th of July holiday there riding their various steam engine trains through the woods. They are vintage engines restored and operated by an all volunteer group. There is also a steam driven power plant and sawmill operated by an Amish team of men. Finally, there is an old soda fountain snack shop from the 30's with all kinds of treats including ice cream floats and phosphates. Lots of fun for a few hours some afternoon when you are in the area.

This is a great place to visit especially if you or your kids like railroads or old steam engines. We have brought our daughtersince she was 2. My parents loved Hesston with their old steam engines. I would highly recommend a visit to Hesston Steam Museum for an afternoon of fun.

We visited for Father's Day and were able to take in an antique truck show as well as the trains. I purchased tickets (4 ride tickets for 4 people) through a local Groupon deal and this made the visit well worth the money. I wouldn't want to pay the normal price of $54 for our family of 5 to get the four ride experience. That being said, our kids loved the trains. We rode the big steam engine, the medium train and two miniature engines. The miniature trains are very unique. The rails are only about seven inches apart and you can feel the swaying of the little cars as you go round the track. The trains go through the woods, over bridges and streams, by a lake. The big engine is amazing in terms of size and power; it's specially designed to take a 5% incline with no problem. It was a beautiful day and despite the holiday, the crowds weren't overwhelming. There was a gift shop with a train table and Chuggington toys for the kids to use. Also there's a concession stand and icecream shop with picnic tables scattered over the grounds. Bathroom facilities were clean. The staff are all volunteers and they were helpful and friendly, offering to take pictures, etc. It was a fun and memorable three hours on a lovely afternoon!

If you are traveling near I 94 or the Indiana Toll Road, you owe yourself a vista to Hesston!! This small but wonderful place is easy to get to & a great enjoyment to young & old that enjoy steam trains and more!!We have visited this museum often and enjoy it very much, take a ride thru their woods on hand built steam locomotives, or just wonder in and out of the many exhibits they have on the grounds!!

We have visited Heston Steam Museum numerous times over the past years. We have always commented on how nice it is to have this place close to home. In recent years we have been even more so surprised by the crowds at Heston on Holidays. If I had not seen it for myself, I wouldn't believe it. We were at the Heston Museum over this past Memorial Day weekend and the train ride through the woods pulled by the old Shay steam engine was wonderful. It was 85 degrees out & the ride through the woods was such a relief from the heat. We are looking forward to returning over the Labor Day weekend. Also, it is so nice to see families together enjoying the outdoors and everything that Heston has to offer. Plus, the fact that this place is kept running by volunteers makes it even more so spectacular. We always enjoy engineer Stephen, he makes our visit fun. The newly built Soda Shop & Restroom facilities make our visit better, even though we miss the concession trailer outdoors.

When in northern Indiana or southern Michigan, I highly recommend a visit to this museum. It's not only about the trains..... they have a great selection of steam and diesel locomotives you can ride behind in every scale from 1.5", 7.5" gauge, all the way up to 30"... but they also have a unique collection of vintage stationary steam devices like steam cranes and vertical boilers... all in operating condition!
